a little help grading, this is my first PSA sub.

I was looking to get a little help if you guys have some free time and want to check out some cards. I have never had cards graded with PSA and I wanted to get a little info on what you think each one of these cards will grade out as. These cards are from my personal collection. I know allot of them are not worth grading, but since I never plan on selling them I think it would be cool to have them graded anyway. Most of these cards I got when I was a kid and the others are ones I've picked up over the past couple years. All of them are players I either enjoy watching or i used to follow when I was younger. I am just curious on what grades to expect. I will list what I think each card will get and then If you could do the same, it might be cool to see what they actually grade out as. Thanks for the help.

You may want to lower your expectations a bit. Especially on the Henderson, McGwire, and Montana cards. The Eckersley probably won't even end up in a holder.

There are some nice looking cards.

One quick suggestion, rather than look at the cards with a biased anticipation, look at them critically. Look at the card and ask yourself would you pay another seller a PSA X price for this card if you were buying it raw. This may help you be a little more objective when reviewing the cards. Don't overlook a flaw(s) hoping that the grader won't catch it.

Good luck, and submitting is a learning experience and a lot like dating. Very few nail it the very first time and if they do, they probably weren't dealing with a real challenge.

Nice cards and good luck. Agree that the Rickey RC might be lower. May want to scan with the lid up for the white bordered cards too - hard to make out the corners.

nice collection there. I can't really offer any grade speculations since it's been proven over and over that I have no idea what PSA graders see or feel when they do what they do.

One thing I can definitely tell you though is that you will not be getting any 9.5s.

I would say you are about a grade off in a lot of places... and .5 is hard to get sometimes - normally centering is big thing for the .5's.

Good luck - and if they are cards for your personal collection the grades should not really matter that much!

  • IMO, you are expecting way too much from many of these cards. The Reggie RC will be lucky to get a 4. The SP Arod is probably a 7 (I see chipping and a soft corner), Griffey is prob an 8 at best, and the Rickey and Montana have no shot at a 9. Just by seeing half the Montana I see slight OC and one soft corner. Good luck with the sub BTW.

A couple of things. A) There is no PSA 9.5. B) you will probably want to lower your grades at least 1.5-2 grades per card.

If I were grading them based on scans, I see them like this
    Manny - 7
    Reggie - 3
    Arod - 8
    Arod sp - 7
    Favre 8
    Griff 8
    Mc - 7
    Rickey 7
    Barry 9
    Barry 8.5
    Rice 7
    AIkman 9

    emmitt 7.5
    elway 7
    marino 6
    montana - tough to tell

  • I agree with the others that you should lower your expectations quite a bit. It seems that people that are newer to the graded card business, go in with expectations that are way too high, and as a result they blame the grading companies saying "this company sucks, they don't know what they're talking about." You have to realize that these are generally the most scrutinizing of eyes that are going to look at your cards. They have no history with the cards, like you do, and as a result they look soley at the condition and eye appeal with no bias. I would suggest that you study PSA's grading standards to get a better idea of what condition issues can do to the grade of a card. And just as a personal piece of advice; there are things like surface scratching, gloss, and yellowing that are often overlooked by collector's when submitting cards. Although none of this really matters if you're just looking to protect your personal collection and have no intentions of selling them.

  • I agree with everyone on here. You really have to go over every card with a fine-tooth comb and spot any little flaw (No matter how small you think it is). Before I send a sub in I always go over all the cards with a magnifying glass at least 5 times. And I always do this on different days to ensure I am consistent with my grading.
Good luck with the sub and please let us know how they turn out.

Jeff, I agree. EVERY time I send in a borderline card with a tiny rubber band mark, printerroller indent/mark, or blemish I figure "hey they might not take too much off for this?" WRONG every time! I whittled down a 100 card sub to about 30, and with raw prices doing well on ebay, I wasnt broken hearted with all the results. Some yes of course, but on the whole I think I did well. NOW to see what grades I got...12 business days so far image

Thanks for the help guys. This is so true, I do have a bias and I'm probably not being very objective either. It is frustrating because most of these cards were taken straight from the pack and put into a case and put into storage out of harms way. When I was a kid no one really worried about the centering and printing flaws of a card unless it was real bad. As long as the card had nice corners and edges it was considered mint. I guess since grading has come around the standard of mint is much higher then it used to be when I was a kid.
  • please save your grading fees, those cards look just fine in a binder page; spend the money on more cards rather than on plastic tombs.

I agree, lower your expectations, especially with the Henderson. Last year I cracked a BBCE box of 1980 Topps and was lucky enough to pull two crisp Hendersons with perfect centering. Got back an 8 and a 9. I was ecstatic about the 9, but I can't help but to think that if it were a 1980 Topps Joe Shmoe it would have come back a 10. With 8,986 Hendersons submitted, there are only 10 PSA 10's in existence. Pretty tough...
