1916-S Lincoln Your Opinions on Grade

Hi all,
While going through possible candidates to submit for grading, I came across a Lincoln cent that I'm tempted to submit to PCGS. It sure has a great story. When I was going through primary school, and was just starting out collecting, I went to an estate sale that included some coins. At the time, I was trying to fill some holes in my blue Whitman folder, and I was thrilled to find a 1916-S cent! It was dirt cheap because it was covered with a strange green gunk, but I was young and didn't have a discerning eye, and it was a hole filler. So I bought it. Only when I got home did I find that the green film was flaking off. Again, being young and not knowing better, I placed the coin to soak in some soapy water, and this is what was revealed (message continues after photos):

What do you think this might grade for? Think it would be worth it to try for PCGS?
Thanks!

Best,
BR

nice high au detail but probably a bit too much environmental damage to be slabbed.

Agree with the above posters, the dreaded green stuff (verdigris) would most likely preclude it from slabbing.
If you really want it slabbed, you may consider NCS for 'conservation', then slabbing. Or if you are a bit more daring, you might try a virgin olive oil soak or some Blue Ribbon if you have some, and see if this removes it. Then submit it if you feel compelled to.

  • That is a nice original coin; however, I'm with the consensus. Don't submit and include it in your Capital plastic collection. You won't get rid of the "green stuff" to the satisfaction of TPG services.

100% aggree, its an AU coin with a great story behind it. I'd type up your story and place the printed story and coin in a holder to pass on to your heirs.

  • Au55 with the green taken into consideration. Nice color and rather clean looking fields, not a bad piece at all, for the 7070.image
