I have climber the ladder as high as i can get. (registry set)

I finally moved into 6th place ATS with my proof Liberty V-Nickel collection. I sit and marvel at the ones above me. I have probably spent around 17k to get where i am( i do not add my coins up for fear my wife may see the total. lol) I have done this over the last 3 or so years. The guys ahead of me have some of the most killer looking proof V nickels that i have ever seen. There is no way i can move any higher without tossing 28 of my 31 coins and starting over. Even then i am not sure that i could locate coins to get higher than 3rd place. I would say the difference between 6th and 5 would be another 20k more. The top 2 sets are well over 6 figures. I am totally amazed at the top registry sets in all classes. It takes some serious money to be at the top of the charts. I am pretty happy with my little set although i am going to upgrade 4 more fairly soon. I will not move up the ladder anymore but.....

You ever spend time just looking at the top sets in awe and wonder??

    You need a bigger ladder.

  • Yes. I'm where you are with Merc's and Buffalos. I know I won't make it into the the top three; however, I'm pleased to have gotten to where I am presently. Take satisfaction to have assembled one of the top sets. Congratulations! Let's marvel together at those that have made it to the top!

I would like to know how many of the top sets were built since 2000. I got to think some of these coins have been in the same hands for decades. I know some were built recently. Sunnywood has some killer sets.

I am also amazed at how bad pictures are on some sets especially at NGC, more of a scan.

  • I had a similar situation with my Washingtons awhile back. Using the "what if" feature in the PCGS registry, I deduced that it would take $15,000 to move up one spot, so I sold the set and switched focus to other series, one of which is Bust Halves. Having more fun now.image

I did not know there was a what if button, that is cool.

I have a few proof v-nickels that i think could be improved by a trip to the NCS car wash. I have spent a lot of time ATS looking at registry sets and i think quite a few of the top sets have used NCS as a means to upgrade. Last time i had a few proofs certified at NGC they came back with stickers attached saying NCS could improve the looks of the coin.

I have thought about regrading. I have a little delimina, about 2/3 of my coins are in pcgs holders and the rest NGC. I really like the looks of proofs in PCGS holders. I would like for them to be in matching holders since there are not any in cool holders now (doiely's, regency etc.) If i was sure my NGC's that are labeled cameo's would cross at pcgs i would go that route. I think PCGS is a little harder on cameo than NGC from the coins i have seen. I really wish NGC would dump the white back ground. My proof shield nickel collection will be in PCGS holders. I plan on getting the 3 NGC's crossed even if i take a hit on them due to the fact i have 2 in old doiely holders, 1 in a 1st gen and a few OGH's.

    CONGRATULATIONS on the set!!! image

Some of the top sets I look at in awe and wonder. Some of the top sets I look at and realize that the owner doesn't have a F'ing clue about coins, but just bought the plastic.

I must say, what gets me about some of the series where there is a large collector base, is how steep the point curve is for the top 3 to 5 spots.

For years I have marveled at the high dollar top registry sets.

At least temporarily I'm at the top of my registry set but by far not high dollar. I just happen to pick a series that not too many people collect. I think my average grade is around VF35. image

I suspect it won't be long before someone passes me up. image

<< What if you took a hugh gamble and had everthing regraded ? >>

    Are you SERIOUS?

It MIGHT be worth the expense IF you do manage to have some regrade higher

but that depends on how many coins is in the set in question.

If you're REALLY NUTZ - crack 'em out and do it! I dare you. image

If one was to take such a risk I would hope they DO NOT crack them out the slabs
because any number of undesirable things could take place or happen to the coins.

Just as beartracks deduced, so too did I. When I found myself at the proverbial fork in the road
and started doing some SERIOUS figuring, as much as I loved my beautiful coins, I decided to find
ONE BUYER that could do the set Justice! The rest is History! image

It is depressing and somewhat curious that most of the top sets in Matte Proof Lincolns have NO pictures of the coins to look at.

So...it is only a bit of text, which dosent impress me one iota.

The most photogenic coins in the Lincoln series....and these high rollers choose to just enter the minimum amount of information required.

Thats like the Miss America Pagent with only text. Useless.

So....I never even bother to look at them.
