Has Sports Degenerated To The Point Where It Is Meaningless Without A Storyline?

I say it every year when the Super Bowl rolls around. First, foremont and it should be the only thing, the Super Bowl is a football game to decide the champion of professional football (in the United States). But in reality, the Super Bowl is about anything and everything BUT a football game to determine the champion of professional football.

So when I visit the front page of CNN.com and see "The top All-Star Game storylines to watch" under the "Sports" section, I am sickened to my stomach. Is that all the sports media cares out? Storylines. ISN'T THE GAME THE STORYLINE? Forgive me, but I am a bottom line type of guy. Who wins. Who loses. Does it really matter that the All-Star is being held "for the first time and last time" at Yankee Stadium? Does it really matter whether Terry Francona decides to bring in Jonathan Papelbon to close the game instead of Mariano Rivera? All that stuff should be meaningless.

What isn't meaningless is that if you are a Phils' fan (stevek), you want the NL to win because that would mean the Phils would have home field advantage in the World Series (assuming they make it that far). Similarly, if you are a Red Sox fan (perkdog), you want the AL to win because that would mean the Red Sox would have home field advantage in the World Series.

Storylines?! Give me a break.

the story lines are not for the fans. They are to get the non-fans to watch, imo.

Dont forget about 10k stories devoted to Josh Hamilton and addiction. In the information age everything is so diluted. Focus on the actual event becomes lost in the shuffle.

One of my favorite all time baseball players is Ty Cobb, so that says what I care about "storylines" - there are some personal views Cobb held that were repugnant to me, but I admire him for what he did on the field and that's how I judge sports stars. If they break the law then a court of law can judge them for that behavior.

Frankly, it's nice that the Phillies and Eagles players are all basically good guys, but even if they weren't, I'd root for them anyway because of the uniform and because it's "my" team. Heck, I even rooted for Terrell Owens when he was an Eagle - LOL

Obviously there are exceptions such as a Michael Vick or OJ Simpson for what they did - that's unacceptable even if they were a Phillie or an Eagle, but I couldn't care less if Ryan Howard likes dressing in drag, as long as he hits HR's - LOL

I agree that the non-sports fan such as say a sports fan's wife who isn't really a sports fan, but just watches the games with her husband just to be with him...that the storylines are more for her.
