certification for canada quarter???

I have just acquired an 1886 Canadian quarter in vf. I don't know if it is the q2 or q4 variety. $400 difference between the two. Which of the certification facilities would you send it to and why? Thanks in advance.

I would send it to CCCS in Montreal. Why? online submission form, not expensive, going to have hard plastic 'slabs'.

If you are looking for a US TPG, PCGS is probably better if you want to sell it, but you'll have to wait 3 months to get the coin back. NGC will do the job and the wait is only 4 weeks or so.

Thanks Ajaan. Being a variety of a Canadian coin I didn't know if the US was the way to go or the Canadian. Thanks again,

  • DO NOT SEND CANADIAN COINS TO NGC

The Canadian market will not give you fair value for them.

PCGS, ICCS or CCCS are the way to go

I am not sure that NGC or PCGS will recognize this variety.

    ICCS or CCCS should work

This is true because most collectors buy the holder and not the coin. There are some very good bargains to be found with Canadian coins in NGC holders. True, NGC overgrades at times, but so does ICCS, PCGS, CCCS, and all the other TPGs.

The anti-NGC campaign is championed by a few Canadian dealers who believe only ICCS can accurately grade Canadian coins.

ICCS used to accurately grade canadian coins. They have gotten very lax in recent years. But hey that means that they migh give him a high grade for his coin image

You will need to go with ICCS or CCCS if you want variety attributed

I do agree, for variety attributation ICCS or CCCS is best.

Do you think that's because Brian's son is doing more of the grading now?

Thanks for all the info guys. I so much like the guys on this forumn better than the US forumnl. The guys who collect foreign coins seem to be more like gentlemen in my humble opinion.

I agree that the old holders sometimes are undergraded, BUT, I have seen a lot of old holders that are greatly OVERgraded too! (all from ICCS).
