What cards to grade?

How do you decide what cards you are going to send out for grading. I have allot of rookie cards of Barry Sanders, Emitt Smith, Troy Aikman ext. I am not sure if a $20-$35 card is worth sending out for grading if I know that it is only a PSA 8. Can you explain the thought process you take when deciding what cards to send and what cards to leave raw.

Let ebay sold prices be your guide. Figure $10 per card for grading. I wouldn't grade much from the modern era that isn't a 10.

no trick question. I'm just rying to figure out what should be graded and what should be left raw. At what price point or dollar value is it best to grade.

Send in the pretty glossy foil ones that look like a rainbow image

If these cards are for you personal collection and you want them protected and are not selling than feel free to submit them on $5 special. If you are trying to sell them and make money than leave them raw - people will hunt for cards they think can be sub'ed.

  • If the graded value exceeds the non-graded value over $30

Search ebay for "sold prices" to help determine
If you don't know what your card will grade, post large scans here, and you will get help.
Of course its a gamble, but a small one...

Grade them all. PSA will sort everything out for you.
  • I look for things like registry anamolies that might do well. Look at the 1993 Bowman Ryan Klesko there are 708 graded copies and 0 10s. Otherwise I only send in cards that have a good registry following this is usually cards of HOFers and Stars.

I think about this question from time to time, especially when I see a huge majority of modern PSA 10 cards selling for $9.99. It just doesn't seem worth it to me to submit $10 cards, even through the bulk or $5 specials.

Say you get a PSA 10 and you list it for $9.99 and that is what it sells for. Now subtract:
    $5.00 grading fee
$0.97 shipping and handling (based on a 25-card sub with a declared value of between $100-500)
    $0.35 eBay listing fee
    $0.97 final value fee
    $0.29 paypal's value fee
    $0.30 additional paypal transaction fee
    -------
$2.21 "profit" (which doesn't include what you paid for the card originally).

Moral of the story: only submit high value cards that will still sell if you don't get a 10 or cards that you plan to keep for your own collection.
  • Personally I only have cards graded that have a non-graded book value $30 or higher.
