It must come from France. I've heard of "piastre of paris" before.

According to the Webster online dictionary:
Etymology: French piastre, from Italian piastra thin metal plate, coin, from Latin emplastra, emplastrum plaster

Did you weigh it? Looks Very rough compared to the Amount of rim damage shown.
