New UK Penny

Just received the new UK penny in change yesterday. Interesting design and looks decent, although I always had a weak spot for the little portcullis... the picture shows the older design on the left and the new on the right (for those non-world coin collectors browsing here!).

I don't particularly care for the new designs much, to me it seems like you're only getting half the picture.

The concept, in and of itself, isn't bad, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired, in my mind.

I wouldn't turn down some for my collection though, either!

(I'm one British coin away from 10, which would make it the 4th country in my collection to hit that mark)

I don't get it... it has the design as if I am already looking at it under a glass and I can't see the lion or the harp... or maybe Mr. Bean is suppost to be looking at it under a glass.

    Is Mr. Bean a numismatist?

And for the questions everyone really wants to know...

Does One Penny really have to appear on both sides?

    What happened to the Queen?

Is there a date on the rim?

A chacun son gout.... to each his own. I can understand not liking the new designs, but I liked them immediately and they're growing on me.

the images shown are the reverse of the old design and the new design. the obverse still is the same old bust of the Queen, with the date on the obverse.

Sorry, I should have posted the obverses to avoid confusion - as you can see, this didn't change much.
