Just placed an almost $700 order at BBCE (scans of minty 1978s added)

This is going to be a blast! I turn 30 soon so I thought the 1978 box would be a good way to celebrate (along with the 30 year, single malt, single cask scotch that arrived from the UK on Friday). The 1987 box is because that was the first year I started buying packs.

1 x 1978 Topps Baseball Unopened Wax Box
1 x 1987 Topps Baseball Unopened Wax Box
1 x 1992 Leaf Baseball Unopened Series 1 Foil Box
1 x 1992 Leaf Baseball Unopened Series 2 Foil Box
1 x 2003 Topps T-205 Baseball Unopened Series 2 Foil Box

That will be fun! I hope you pull a few Eddie Murrays. Even better if they are mint! I turned 30 in March and was kind of depressing.image I'am over it now though. The scotch should help.image

It would have been $800 WITHOUT the '87 box. image

I remember buying boxes of '87 Topps from the local mini-mart. It was around $13 per box when buying by the pack at $0.35 each.

In that case (pardon the pun) you should've bought a whole case of each series. But I don't know if even that will be enough (you only get 36 golds a box)

Sorry to hear you didn't pull the big cards you wanted. It's always tough in the ripping world. I just went through similar luck a couple of weeks ago. I ripped several 78, 79 & 80 wax packs, rack packs and cellos and didn't pull any big cards and the few big names I pulled had centering or other issues because of the cello or being on the front or back of a rack. Either way, I'm sure you had fun even.

Good luck if you decide to do any subs.
  • Haha well that is good as long as you had fun, that is the only thing that matters

  • I haven't opened the 1987 topps yet. I'm just opening it to finish a set anyway... my goal is build as many Topps sets as possible from opening packs myself. It makes the task last longer and I get to relive some memories.

The Topps 205 was fun. I pulled an Eric Duncan Auto and a Rocco Baldelli game used. Along with 40 minis with various backs. The box topper was a small box with 20 minis inside, I like that. The tri-fold are neat and I got one of the back variations of those. WELL beat the odds in the box but still a little pricey for what I got.

If those were the best cards from the 1978 box then that box was "questionable" to say the least. I would be pissed. Even very reputable dealers can get some junk stuff sometimes. An entire wax box that produced nothing is unacceptable in my book. I would not buy unopened packs for this reason. JMO.

  • On the bright side, I would gladly buy the minty looking 78 commons from you. Still need about 250 that meet my criteria as MINT for the set.
  • Questionable came to mind but there were no other signs of any type of tampering.

The stars are nice cards with sharp corners but OC. About half of the stars would grade 9 OC with some that might pull straight 8s. Basically, there was about 1 nicely centered card per pack and sometimes the centered card had slight chipping or a soft corner.

I'll be grading those and hoping for some 10s to recoup some cost. The ones that get 9s will be going into my set image Anything left over after that is up for grabs.

I've opened some 78 boxes from Steve and had similar results, but I've also opened some and had great results. Totally hit or miss product. I'm think some of you guys are misunderstanding that prscott did pull some stars; he only scanned the cards he thought would grade highly, because a PSA 10 Jackson Todd is worth a whole lot more than a PSA 8 Nolan Ryan. Even some of the low pop 9s bring great money.

If you would like to compare notes, I bought a '78 topps box from BBCE in March '07,and here is my sub results:

1 Ryan, 1 Rose (base), 2 Molitors, 0 Murrays - I knew the OCs would come back OCs, I just wanted them slabbed. I subbed most of my stars and lo-pops. As I opened each pack, I put every card into a soft sleeve so I can keep them nice in case I want to sub some more. I was overall happy with it.

It had the notorious print defects on the front. Both cards were almost identical, all of the corners were "sharp", but one received a 8 (OC) and one received a 4. Oh well...

Here are the cards after I got them back from PSA (sold them on ebay)

I will admit, the regular 1992 Leaf set is a yawner compared to the gorgeous Black Gold set. That's okay, just wait for a complete Black Gold set to show up on Ebay or something; it'll be much cheaper that way anyhow.

I've been picking up small/medium lots on ebay and getting some from members here too. Any set that I build I like to have at least some, if not most, of it come from packs I open myself. In this case I think I just stick with some image
