My First ever submission - Grades just Popped! Mantles have confused me -

Hi Guys,

I have been reading the boards for three years, but posted only about 6 messages. I have been collecting baseball cards since 1976, when I was a kid, and until last week never submitted any cards to be graded. In fact, I have never owned a graded card. My mother-in-law gave me a 1 year membership in PSA for Christmas and I finally got my act together, and fought off my fears, and sent 6 cards in to be graded on July 3. I just got confirmation that PSA received my cards today. So that was a big relief, in that the post office didn't lose my submission. I have a couple questions - what does it mean on the account page when it asks if you want your submission to be private or public? Does PSA grade cards at their facility on weekends, or just M-F? Also, when PSA sends my cards back, do they require a signature to get them from the P.O.?

Also, what do you think the likely grades will be for the following 6 cards I have attached - I must admit I never posted an image here either - so this may or may not work.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Rich

Hello Rich and welcome to the boards. Best of luck on your cards.

I have a couple questions - what does it mean on the account page when it asks if you want your submission to be private or public? Just means if you want others to be able to see what cards you submitted and the grade you eventually receive.

Does PSA grade cards at their facility on weekends, or just M-F? Weekends off

Also, when PSA sends my cards back, do they require a signature to get them from the P.O.? Cards are sent registered mail and require a signature

    Hi Rich,

It would be better if you scanned the cards with a dark background (perhaps leave your scanner lid open while scanning).

Then you would get better opinions as to possible grades.

Just a little tough to see the edges/borders.

Thanks for the suggestion of a dark background when scanning cards for grade opinions. I have never tried leaving the lid up on the scanner - I will see if that works to create a darker background next time I scan cards for posts. Thanks!

    Here they are:

Line # Item # Cert # Grade Description Type Country
    1 1 15451943 N8: MISCUT 1961 TOPPS 300 MICKEY MANTLE Card US
    2 1 15451944 NEAR MINT-MINT 8 MC 1960 TOPPS 563 MICKEY MANTLE ALL STAR Card US
    3 1 15451945 VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1954 TOPPS 201 AL KALINE Card US
    4 1 15451946 EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1956 TOPPS 200 BOB FELLER Card US
    5 1 15451947 MINT 9 1982 TOPPS TRADED 98T CAL RIPKEN JR. Card US
    6 1 15451948 EXCELLENT-MINT 6 1935 GOUDEY 4-IN-1 1A CARLETON/DEAN/FRISCH/ORSATTI Card US

I have several questions from this - On the 1961 Mantle - What does N8: Miscut mean and why is this card being labled miscut? Do they holder it this way? Do I get a credit for it not being graded?

On the 1960 Mantle AS - what does an 8MC translate into in a straight no qualifier PSA grade?

Shouldn't miscut apply to cards that have printed material from two different cards, or another card on it?

Thanks - I am happy with the grades as the Ripken, Goudey, and Feller all graded higher than I thought they would. I am just a little confused by the Mantles.

    Thanks!

I see border all the way around the 1961 Mantle. How's the back?
  • uyu906uyu906 Posts: 276 ✭✭
    Nick,

The back border was the same as the front on the 1961 Mantle. It was well within the normal range for this card. Any thoughts of how I can find out more about why they gave it an N8?

    Thanks,
    Rich

I have several questions from this - On the 1961 Mantle - What does N8: Miscut mean and why is this card being labled miscut? Do they holder it this way? Do I get a credit for it not being graded? THIS CARD WILL NOT BE HOLDERED. YOU SHOULD GET A VOUCHER CREDIT.

On the 1960 Mantle AS - what does an 8MC translate into in a straight no qualifier PSA grade? NO, MC IS A QUALIFIER

Shouldn't miscut apply to cards that have printed material from two different cards, or another card on it? MC can apply to a few situations: sometimes a card is not the right size/shape [e.g. diamond cut]. MC also typically applies to cards that have centering of 100/0 or greater.

    Thanks! >>

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

On the 1960 Mantle, since there is no white showing on the top of the card, that essentially puts it into the 100/0 border, which is officially miscut.

Cards that exhibit an atypical cut for the issue or ones that contain partial portions of more than one card will be designated "MC".

Is that one of the qualifiers that you can ask to be waived like OC in order to get a straight PSA grade? If so, what would an PSA 8MC translate into, a PSA 6?

    Thanks!
