Anyone following the WSOP Main Event?

We're 20 guys being eliminated from the 666 who will make the money. A lot of big name pros are left. A no name has the chip lead at 900K+ with the average chip stack falling close to 200K. Phil Hellmuth (double the avg), Men the Master, Hoyt Corkins, Mike Matusow, Allen Cunningham and Johnny Chan are all still involved.

It's kinda anti-climatic now as I think the final table isn't played until is it November?
  • i agree, i think it's silly to postpone the main event. if they want the finale in November just play the damn thing in November. It's very anti-climactic. I also hate that they dont broadcast live, or within a few hours of the event actually taking place. gotta do the pre-packaged fluff and stretch it out over 10 weeks.
  • As usual many top pro's gone 1st day, many expected pro's to fill the final table but as usual look for a lot of new faces come November
Jerry Yang appears to be a 1 YR WONDER with his early exit

666? Yikes image Been following a bit of it, but not too closely as I always like to find out some of the stuff when it actually airs. It's always nice to see a new player win, but the final table sucks when there isn't one of the big names on it. Lee Watkinson was about the biggest name on the final table last year if I recall correctly, but he's too quiet to be amusing. So it really seemed like a bunch of cardboad cut-outs at the table. Matusow is a moron, but he is good for television. Same with Helmuth to some, although I cannot stand watching him unless he's losing.

I was following my brother, who made it halfway thru Day 2b.

Yang is terrible, by far the worst main event champ ever.

It is a complete joke that the final table is played 4 months later. They are playing it in November so they can market the people in the final table, so America has some idea who these people are. ESPN and the rest of the poker world need to realize that poker was a fad, and that whatever marketing they try and do to pump their poker ratings is useless. Only the hardcore poker lovers are watching. The casual fan that watched poker 2-3 years ago has moved on to other things. Everyone points to field at the Main Event to gauge how popular poker is. What they should be pointing to are the fields at the WPT events, which are considerably smaller than they were at its peak.

I do hope that a pro finally wins it this year, though.

Phew...What nitwit at the network came up with this "genius" idea? LOL. I guess the idea came from like the stories they tell about the athletes at the Olympics with their trials and tribulations of physical exertion to get to the Olympics. But that is sporting events and it can be interesting. These WSOP finalists are mostly addicted gamblers who simply labored at the game through many smoke filled, all night poker sessions, and are now on a lucky hot streak of winning the "races" and "coin flips" in the tournament. I mean Who TF cares about them personally? The TV audience who views this maybe could stand to hear a quick synopsis on the background of the player, and then really just wants to see the action of who wins, and not the personalities of unknown compulsive gamblers.

I had no idea that the final table isn't until November. What are they waiting for, Sweeps week? That's one terrible marketing move IMHO.

    Bob....

steve, please tell us how you really feel, you hold your emotions so close to the vest, its so hard to tell.

LOL. The bottom line is ya really basically gotta be a gambling addict to wanna spend $10,000 on a lottery ticket...and I have heard many poker pros say that entering the WSOP is basically the same thing as buying a lottery ticket.

The winner of the $9,000,000 top price has won at 900 - 1 odds on their 10K lottery ticket. Congratulations on being fortunate.

If anyone does indeed care, Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Shawn Sheikan and Phil Hellmuth are all still involved with play ended for day 4. There are 189 players left from a field of over 6800. Cunningham and Hansen are in the top 25 chip stacks with the Shiek in the top 10. Matusow and Hellmuth are slightly under the average chip stack. If I recall correctly, last year with about this many guys left, only Scotty Ngyuen and Lee Watkinson were around as far as name pros go. It'd be awesome if one of those 5 made it to the final table...in November image

Amazing to me how Matusow sometimes does well in these tournaments because he often makes bad decisions. He was in or near the WSOP final table a few years back. Perhaps it's just random luck of the fact that he enters so many tournaments, that probably the odds say he "has to" finish high in some of them, and a few of them happen to be the WSOP.

I remember Jamie Gold when he won the WSOP, a number of times he was all-in with the odds against him and he kept winning the hands anyway. Sometimes "random good luck" is hard to figure out, but it definitely happens.

when gold won a couple years ago, I bet $10 on Cunningham to win it all at 250-1....alas he came in 4th (should have bet him to just make the FT, I think it was like 50-1)...I ponied up the $20 to watch the FT live online....even though you couldn't see hole cards, it was a pretty cool telecast. I almost liked it better not knowing what they had because Gordon and whatever special guest was in the booth with him would try to figure out the action.

I think Cunningham makes the FT again this year.

Cunningham can play poker - no doubt about that. It's the "quiet" guys who are usually the best poker players.

    so much for cunningham....

Cards are in the air on day 6 - Phil Helmuth got a penalty that cost him 1 orbit for verbally abusing a guy that outplayed him on the last hand last night. With the blinds/ante's where they are, the penalty costs Hellmuth 11% of his stack (81,000)...all I can say is WOW. I mean, this guy is 79 players away from 9MM, control yourself dude. The difference of going out now or #1 is about $8.95MM. Wouldn't you want every chip you can get?!?!?

ESPN and WSOP organizers must be pissed there isn't a single pro at the FT (I'm not counting Schwartz, I bet half the poker community doesn't recognize him)....can't wait to see the marketing campaign leading up to November...."Demidov....Suharto....it's the Final Table Live on ESPN!!".....I really hope nobody watches so that they can sh!tcan this awful idea.

So what are these stiffs going to do for 4 months? All the confidence they have built up over the last week could be shattered if they run bad before the FT. If I were them, I wouldn't even sit down at a table between now and then - I'd want to hang onto that feeling that I'm playing the best I've ever played.

What is wrong with the idea? Lots of people have no objection to it.

It'd be like playing the first three rounds of the Masters in April and the final round in July. Guys just have good and bad weeks. This takes all of their momentum away,
