A serious question about Ryan Howard

HyperionHyperion Posts: 7,440 ✭✭✭
does he deserve to be @ the all star game?

think he'll get the nod as a reserve? Im not sure that the league HR & RBI leader has ever NOT been at the all star game

If V-Tek is in then he definately deserves it IMO.

Will V-Tek be back in Boston, or will the Sox go after Ryan Doumit from the Pirates ?

they're going to have a roster spot from Soriano not being there, but I dont know if they have too many 1bs on the roster already.

Howard will be the hottest player in the league going into the All Star break, but he will not be there. There will however, be plenty of flash in the pans. Howard has
all the motivation he needs. He put the screws to both Cardinal All Stars this week! NEXT

Too bad Howard will be watching the playoffs from his couch come October!

Yes he deserves to be an allstar, despite his anemic batting average he does after all
lead the league in HR's and Rbi's

    Good for you.

Ahh yes...all the Howard bashers with their snide little comments - their jealousy shows again because every one of them wishes Howard was on their team. Well, we the Phillies have him and you don't. Ha! Ha! Ha!

And yes of course he desreves to be in the All Star game - that's a no brainer.

I am as pleasantly shocked at the intelligence of the All-Star selectors as I have ever been. Howard is clearly far behind Pujols and Berkman this year, but even with the no-brainers to the side, Adrian Gonzalez is also having a significantly better season than Howard and it's good to see him get the roster spot he's earned. I suspect that I'm giving credit where it is not due - Gonzalez is probably only going because someone on SD had to go - but possibly, just possibly, the utter irrelevence of RBI to evaluating a player is finally being understood.

So, no, Ryan Howard does not deserve to go to the All-Star game - he's not even all that close. And as a fan of both St. Louis and Houston I can say that "jealousy" has absolutely nothing to do with it - if you could clone Howard I might consider trading Pujols for BOTH of them, but even then it'd be a close call.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.
  • Lets take a step back on a few things discussed about RYan Howard, and get some accuracy and perspective...

1)Being the leader in HR and RBI does not necessarrily equate to being the best, or better than somebody with less HR/RBI. It can equate to all star because all star is a gimmick for the fans anyway. There are far better measurements than RBI. In this case though, Ryan's RBI total is much higher than what his batting stats suggest it should be. Why? Because he has been outstanding hitting with men on base. So actually in this case, his RBI are telling something that some of the measurements are failing to do.

2)His strikeouts. A strikeout, as compared to the other batted outs, is only minimally more damaging. A strikeout costs, on average, appx 2-3 runs per EVERY 100 strikeouts. So, 100 batted ball outs, compared to 100 strikeouts, would net a team appx an extra three runs on average. Get over the strikeouts, and save that same disdain for ALL OUTS made by the batter.

    3) Why judge him on one half season? The previous two full seasons he has been outstanding. If he does this lower rate of hitting another two seasons, then he would be simply a decent/better than average hitter, as opposed to the superb hitter he was the previous two seasons.

Do the Phillies play baseball ?
Last time I watched them play Boston and LAA at home, they went 1-5.
Chase Utley was swinging at mosquitos instead of baseballs.

The time before that, they were getting embarrassed by this team that the Red Sox
    swept in the world series.

Sorry, but it's kind of hard to take the national league seriously. But if you want
to call it baseball, then be my guest.

Since 2001 the AL has only won 4 of the last 7 world series...I would hardly call that dominate, especially when the payrolls are so different! How much
are the Yankees spending to win a title every 9 years since 63? Red Sox are averaging a title once every 30 years since they have been a club..all this
    with Ted Williams too!

Just imagine if the D Rays could add another 90 million in payroll to thier team...it would show just how bad the Red Sox are!

I'm pretty certain that Dave Kingman in 1984 led the A.L. in Homers & RBIs and also didn't make the All-Star team. That year he played for Oakland A's.
    Enjoy your collection!

well, Kingman wasnt exactly mr.popularity; kind of a douchebag isnt he?

Yea, Yea, Yea...Yea, Yea, Yea...Yea, Yea, Yea.....

Bottom line - If Howard played in New York, half the opinions here would be different and he'd probably be starting in the All Star game.

    Erik

Kong led the NL with the cubs one year with 48, in 1984 Armas led the AL.

I remember one year Kingman was leading the NL in Homers yet was batting 198.

He wound up at 203 but didn't lead the league, I think Schmidt ended up winning the title.

    Steve

Erik, unless of course you are saying he was leading at the time?

Really? the people saying he doesn't deserve it are not NY fans. From what i saw NY fans think he deserved it.

Get off your anti NY bandwagon.

Oh please stop with your silly ridiculous innuendos. In no way, shape or form am I anti-NY. I congratulated the NY Giants thoroughly when they beat the Patriots and I clearly stated beforehand that I was rooting for the Giants to do so. The only NY team I don't like is the Mets because they are in the Phillies division with their unfair bloated payroll, stealing players from other teams, and despite that they still can't move ahead of the Phillies - Ha! Ha!
