I think this is the worst trade Beane has ever made. I mean, can you even call what the A's got in return "prospects"? They seem more like guys that have already proven they can't play at the major league level, except for Gallagher and I would say that he has been mediocre at best so far this year.
  • The Cubs did much better then the Brewers. Bean must have been given something on the side in order to justify this trade.
Perhaps he received some shares of Mark Cubans company or an island off the coast of Hawaii. Yes, this trade makes no
sense for the A's. They could have received much better for these two kids.

I can't understand what Beane is thinking here. All four of those guys for just Harden is reasonable, but throw in Gaudin and it's plain stupid.

Gallagher is decent and still very young, Murton is 27 and his "prospect" days are long gone so what you see is pretty much what you get (utility man/roster filler), Patterson is decent and still pretty young at 25 and Donaldson is barely above the Mendoza line at A ball and is 22 as of now....

Beane completely ditched his OBP, SLG style that he talks about so much in "Moneyball" too.

EDIT: Pressure is on the Phils now, if they want to make a serious run this postseason.

Maybe it's time for the Yankees to throw in the towel and trade Mussina to the Phillies now? image

I think you're right, Goot. The Phillies need to make a move sooner rather than later. It seems like the two biggest names on the market have been taken though.

This really has me perplexed and I don't have a team involved!

Anyways, I was thinking about it and the only thing that makes sense is that Beane doesn't think too highly of Harden's durability. Still though, I would think that he could get some better prospects for those two guys. Who knows though, maybe Patterson and Murton will pick it up with the change of scenery and a spot in the everyday lineup.
  • only way this makes sense to me is if beane was too worried about harden and his injury problems. He might think harden may not even last this season...much more next, which will be his last year before free agency. If harden gets hurt sometime after the all star break, beane is essentially saddled with harden for 09 because his value will be incredibly low (another injured season and pending free agency) and thus wouldnt net anything close to a decent package in a trade. still not sure why beane didnt wait a bit to see if other teams might offer more. as it stands, harden was seemingly the best pitcher on the market (not sure if a.j. burnett is available). it's not like the cubs were giving up their top prospect (which laporta was for the brewers)..making the deal perhaps too sweet to pass up.

as an a's fan, i dont really mind seeing harden go. i knew he would get traded as soon as his value was high enough. he's caused years of frustration...and would likely have left the a's after 09. plus, i actually like murton and thought he wasnt utilized well by the cubs. but, i still dont know why gaudin was included in the deal. he's a decent pitcher that, if his current BB/Inn ratio is an indication he's put his walking ways behind him, could be as good as gallagher.

That was definitly a good trade by the Cubs, that was exactly what they needed!
  • if Harden stays healthy... geez. the A's got raped.
  • Didn't Beane also pay millions to some 16 year old kid from south of the border? I guess he is going against his philosophy.

The Cubs gave up nothing more than future roster fillers for Harden, and it is a good gamble for the Cubs to win it all this year. Harden is certainly one of the best pitchers in the game when he is actually on the mound.

Beane maybe could have gotten more, but the GM's are all away that Harden is made of glass, and that he is a legit challenger to Nomar Garciaparra in the glass man category.

You're completely wrong, Rocco Baldelli owns that. Although, Rocco got diagnosed with some Mitochondrial exhaustion condition so I guess that's a decent excuse.

I agree. They are really going to be tough to beat. The only thing that scares me a little is that they are only 20-26 away and 35-10 at Wrigley. The Cubs last 22 games of the regular season they only play 6 home games. The last series of the year will be in Milwaukee. The starting rotation is very strong now. Besides Dempster and Zambrano being 15-0 at home. Adding Harden and Lilly continuing to improve, it is a solid rotation.

That's a thought-provoking concern . . . but I don't know if I'd worry too much about that at this point. Only 2 of the 6 first place teams have winning records on the road right now: the Angels are 28-17 and the Phillies are 25-21.

Pinella will just have to make sure he adjusts his post-season rotation to make sure that Zambrano and Dempster only pitch at home.
