question about Ebay message I got.

I recently had a ebay member message me about a item. When I went to message him back from the Ebay site...it would not let me answer his question without adding a credit card to my profile. I added one, but I still do not see the credit card I added in my personal info. Has anyone else ever had to add a credit card to respond to a message? All i had on file before I added the card was my PayPal info.

    Are you sure you did not fall for some new type of phishing mail?

    No it was not from a email. It was directly from the ebay site, thats why I thought it was legit. It would not let me actually send the message until I placed a card on file. Maybe I should call and cancel the card?

    Not to be an alarmist, but that sounds like a scam to get your credit card number. You should closely monitor the card's activity for the next couple of days. I can't imagine why you would have to provide a cc number just to reply to a message. If you are the least bit suspicious, go ahead and cancel that card. Tell the company that it was compromised and have them issue you a new one. The peace of mind is worth the effort.

    Has there ever been scams like that though directly through Ebay's site. I always thought they came from wierd email spams, not directly from the site.

    Sorry, I don't know the answer that. All I know is that I'm a worry-wart. If I suspected that someone had gotten ahold of my cc number for nefarious purposes, I'd simply cancel the thing. I would sleep more comfortably for certain.

    Yes there have been fishing scams thet were in the form of a question from a seller. One of the reasons Ebay started blocking bidders was due to fake second chance offers being sent.

    Did you click on a link in the email and was the email in your messages on Ebay. If you clicked on a link there is a chance you went to a mirror site and they stole your CC number. If it was in your messages on Ebay then it is most likely legit.

    There is no question ebay would ever ask that would make you enter your credit card #.
    I hate to say 100% scam but .... 100% scam.

    You have been scammed. I would cancel that credit card today before it gets out of hand.

    go back to the email that you started from that looked like it took you to Ebay's site and hold your mouse over the link without clicking. Now look down on the lower left corner in the status bar and take a look at the site it was actually pointing you to.

    I have no CC on file with ebay, and I have answered 3 messages from potential buyers in the last 3 days. Something is wrong with your situation.

    I did not get a email anywhere. Not in ebay, nor my email. I simply got a message from a bidder, went to message him back, and was asked for a credit card number to verify it was me. I was on www.ebay.com not some other website. I cancelled the card.

    If you did not get an email in your messages or in your Email then how did you get a message from an Ebay member? If you got it any other way then you may have some spyware on your computer that set up and took you to a mirror site. I don't have a CC on file with Ebay and have never had to verify my CC to ask or respond to a question.

    I had a item for sale that did not sell for my reserve. A member asked me about it after the auction closed. When I went to respond to him, it asked me for a credit card number. I did the live chat with Ebay this morning and they confirmed the card I used, but said it did not update properly in MY EBAY personal info. I guess as long as they confirmed it, it is ok. Unless you guys know if the Live Chat is not reliable.

    Recently Ebay has been trying to up their security. I've been asked to verify my identity a couple of times, but never via CC. If they asked me that I would have immediately called or gone to live chat asking for an explanation.
    My opinion, my CC # isn't anyones business unless I'm purchasing something.

    similar thing happened to me last week. when i signed into ebay, they then asked for cc info. i had to cancel the cc and ended up with a virus which froze my computer. i had to get a tech to reinstall my operating system.

    edited to add... this virus asked me for cc info when signing into ebay, paypal and aol. it pops up AFTER you enter your id and password. thats how i was fooled. it is targeting many sites. i dont know how i got it, but i am aware of the phishing emails and never respond to them.

    Cancel the card immediately!! I wouldn't take a chance. The credit card company will reissue you a card with a different number.

    I think what people are trying to say is "How did the member conact you?" Did he send you an email directly or did he post a question through the site? If he emailed you directly then you should just reply to him through email, without going through ebay. If he sent you a message through "ebay" then you should see that on my messages AFTER you have already signed on to ebay. If you got an email, from "Ebay", that when you clicked on the respond message link, it asked you for your information, then you were 100% scammed and a little Chinaman is running around Beijing looking to spend YOUR money.
    IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

    Ok....one more time. I had a item up for sale. The auction ended without hitting my reserve. After the auction I get a internal Ebay message from a bidder who did not win but is still interested. I go to reply to him, and a message pops up to place a card on file. I did this direct through the ebay site. No emails, no wierd sites, it was directly through Ebay. I contact Live Chat this morning and they confirmed the credit card I used to do this and said they are upping their security. I already canceled the card to be safe, even though Ebay confirmed the card.

    The only forum I can find where this has happened before is this one below. But it still does not make sense to me. I am in the USA

    I found this post below. I guess Ebay does require new users to enter CC info when trying to message. I am not a new user though. Feedback score is low (18) but I have been a member since Oct 07. Not sure why I had to do this, but it looks like it is legit

    If ebay is doing this, its going to make a lot of the phishing sites look legit in asking for CC information.

    I cant understand why ebay is making new users put in their CC info again to just answer a question.
    When you sign up maybe, but geez, to answer a question?

    Have you been logging into different computers? One of Ebays new security features is the if you log in from a different location that usual its program will try to determine your identity.
