2008 Topps Chrome Baseball - Good Stuff?

I need some opinions. I was looking to rip a case of 2008 Topps Chrome. With the Microsoft Rebate, they are a little more than $400 through Blowout.

Are they worth it?

I saw that link when it was posted. I actually purchased 2 boxes from a local store a few weeks ago. I broke the odds and pulled a Superfractor (1/1) of Kyle McLellan which a board member purchased and in the 2nd box pulled a Melky Cabrera Red Ref (/25) and a Clay Bucholz autograph. But, there are a lot of parallels and chase cards. I would like to put together a base/refractor/heritage/insert set, but just wanted to get opinions on if there is anything in the box worth chasing other than the Supers and Reds...
  • How many boxes are in a case? $400 seems like a helluva deal if it's 12 boxes.

The autograph lineup is pretty poor this year - Buchholtz, Hu, and Cueto are probably the only guys who will sell for more than $10

Refractors are always a total crapshoot in terms of resale value. It's all dependent on whether or not player/team collectors need a card. I saw a 2007 BC Pujols blue refractor sell for over $100, and a month later it sold for $12.

If you can find a retail case for the same price I'd take it in a heartbeat. Seems half the cards in the box are either an insert or refractor. Plus, retail has blue refractors and xfractors, which sell pretty well because retail isn't broken in bulk

For $400, you might not make your money back barring hitting a Superfractor or other 1/1, but you'll recoup enough and it'll be a fun rip

I had fun busting almost a case of the stuff. Think I'm finally done buying for now but still need 2 base cards and a bunch of inserts and Heritage. No amazing pulls - got about 3 or 4 red #/25, a blue bucholz auto #/200 and another blue #/200 of Kevin Hart I think.

Did pull a black heritage refractor of Pat Burell though #/59

I did the set last year and bindered it so I felt the need to do it again this year.

$400 does sound like a good deal but that might be a 10 box case but even at $40 a box, that's damn good.

I really like the Topps Trading Card History set in Chrome. Looks fantastic

    They are 12 box cases. The cost is 569.99 + 24.00 S/H - Total $593.99 - 142.49 (Microsoft Cashback) - 17.10 Ebay Bonus Bucks

Total - $434.40, so not quite to $400, but not bad for $36.20/box delivered.

They are giving cash back discounts for buying any "buy it now" that was searched through their search engine.

I have several cards(base, refractors, xfractors, autos) for trade if any is trying to complete the set. You can pm with your needs or for a list of what I have available.
  • Superfractors and Red /25 are hobby only exclusives. Hobby boxes have 2 RC autos per box.

Usually Hobby HTA has the best odds. Unsure if plates are in retail I know Bowman excludes them some/all of the time.

  • Hate reviving dead threads, but I can't get enough of these. For those that find themselves with a sudden fever to rip, these are a lot of fun. I have bought about 8 boxes of retail from Walmart this week and actually pulled 2 auto cards. They may be killing the refractor craze but for now this issue is awesome.

I agree. I haven't pulled anything of value yet but it is a fun product to rip. I've picked up 3 blasters over the past couple of days. I love the blue refractors! I really wish they'd let the Mickey Mantle sets die, though. They are getting anoying.

I've ripped a few boxes with my son, he takes the Reds and Jeter and I put the rest in a box. I have sent some to guys on the board in trade for Reds cards for the boy. I'll probably rip some more tomorrow, I'll continue until the A&G come out. I swore off buying new packs back in the late 80's (when I quit collecting) but once I opened some Heritage this year it's been like kicking heroin staying away from ripping a few days per week. I need help, because I really have no use for the cards (other than the Heritage which I completed and will again next year).
