Matt LaPorta's a beast. I saw him play in person numerous times while he was at U of Florida and the dude has a TON of power.

He's 23 and in AA. Here are his stats through 84 games....

    BA .288
    OBP .402
    SLG .576
    2B 23
    HR 20
    RBI 66

So young. I sure hope he can get the help he needs.

While I hate to see Laporta be traded away, I couldn't be happier to see the Brewers be mid-season buyers for once! I've watched this team trade away just about all the talent they've brought up in the past 20 years. The new ownership doesn't seem to mind making big moves. Let's hope this will be better than the Linebrink debacle of 2007!

    GO BREWERS!
  • I think this is an awesome move by the Brewers and although there is no guarantee he'd want to stay, the Brewers will definitely have the money for Sabathia when the season is done (as they wanted to sign Sheets, but he's a true show-me-the-money-and-I'll-get-injured type of guy). What a huge upgrade from Sheets, but while they are there together, what a one-two righty-lefty punch!
    Go Brew-crew!
    Jay
  • This is a bad move by the Brewers. They give up a rising star on a guy who probably has more downside then upside.
Plus, there's no guarentee the Brewers will sign him.

Here's a question for you guys. We all know that there have been many great black righty pitchers in MLB.
Bob Gibson, Doc Gooden, and Dave Stewart to name just a few.
However, how many great lefty pitchers have ever had a solid major league career ?
I can only think of Vida Blue who was great but yet very erratic. I can think of Dontrelle Willis who is struggling now.
I can't think of too many others. It's just weird to me that not many left handed black pitchers have either made it to the bigs,
or have had solid careers in the bigs.

Although I am sad to CC leave this season appears to a wash. I hope this deal turns out as well as when we sent Bartolo Colon to Montreal ans picked up Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore, and Brandon Phillips.

    Al Jackson was a lefty

    Good for you.

I disagree. The Brewers’ farm system is loaded – as evidenced by the TEN all-stars at the Double-A level this year. While I am sad to see LaPorta go, we have a very young outfield ready to go for the future: Ryan Braun, Tony Gwynn Jr. & Corey Hart. We can’t play 4 outfielders, so why not move one of them for a pitcher who should be able to help us win right now? Even if he leaves at the end of the season we get 2 compensatory first round picks next year, so there’s not all that much to lose here, IMO.
  • i really do like laporta...and maybe melvin would have been able to get cc without sending him had he wait for the trade market to settle a bit....but, it was still a solid preemptive strike as it was clear shapiro was willing to trade sabathia as long as a solid prospect or two was thrown in his direction.

good for shapiro for getting a top hitting prospect to help that woeful (minus sizemore) outfield. i didnt think he would get as good as a prospect given cc is likely a rental. the big question is whether melvin can get cc to sign. i know sabathia is a california guy...i doubt the giants and a's would fork over johan santana money for him (giants would, but not with zito and no offense on the roster). The two LA teams (with garland, lowe and penny as free agents) will likely be in the running. And lets keep in mind that CC has mentioned (through his agent) that he WILL test the market. so, the brewers may have the money..but, other teams may not only have more...but also more intangibles (bigger market, in California, etc).

i bet billy beane is happy. with cc gone and so many competing teams needing a solid starter (phillies, cubs, yanks), beane might have the best pitcher in the market (assuming, which i do think is true, harden is on the market).
  • as an Indians fan I hate to see C.C. go, but im sure he wants a ridiculous contract like Santana and I might be able to justify it if he had pitched halfway decent in the playoffs last year. Basically the Brewers are getting a rent a player for the 2nd half and Sheets is a free agent as well. No playoffs for the brew-crew since 82' so i guess they are trying for the golden ring.

I think it's a good move for the Brewers. Nice to see them go for the playoffs, and C.C. despite a rough start this year, is still a top pitcher, and the switch to the NL will make him even better.

I thought MLB did away with the compensation picks?

Nope, they have them after the 1st and ,I believe, 2nd or 3rd rounds.

EDIT: It's the 1st and 3rd rounds. Check out this years draft, it tells you at the bottom who the picks are for.....

    2008 draft

Laporta was drafted as trade bait and it paid off nicely. They lucked out and didn't have to give up Escobar or Gamel as well in the deal. There is nowhere for Laporta to play in Milwaukee

Regardless of whether or not Sabathia is a rental for the rest of the season, the Brewers win. Compensatory draft picks next year will give them 5 of the first 35 picks if Sabathia leaves via FA.
  • I disagree with everyone who thinks the Brewers made out. The Brewers will not be able to sign Sabathia unless he totally flops in the 2nd half and possible postseason. If he shines, then the Yankees or someone with bigger money then Milwaukee will woo him away.
In other words, they lose Laporta instead of using Laporta to trade for someone the way the Reds used Hamilton to trade for a great young pitcher. Trading good minor leaguers for rentals is bad business.

I really think the they want to win now, regardless if it huts tomorrow. Maybe they had started contract talks and felt they could sign him, who knows until he leaves.

I believe that was good trade by the Brewers, the Cubs though just made a trade to stay with the Brewers in the Division (Hardon)!
