Howard Newcomb Deluxe Edition (help from experts)...

Hopefully there is an expert out there who can assist with a question regarding the book...

United States Copper Cents 1816-1857 by Howard Newcomb Deluxe Leather Edition on Heavy Paper

...how many photographic plates should be in the book - I have a copy of the book with 11 plates that
end with 1843 - is this copy missing some plates?

Thank you very much.

Somehow I think your question would get better response in the NBS e-sylum. Wayne Homren would either have the answer, or gladly publish your question there.

The plates match the standard edition. I can't find any notes to say there are more in the deluxe. There was, however, a supplemental plate that is found laid in, but that is not standard for any edition. I am not an expert, so this is subject to revision.

My copy does have the laid-in addenda...

  • RTS, I have a similar version of the book I think. Heavy paper with the laid in addenda but not leather bound. It also has 11 plates that go up to 1848. Did you find any info about this? Was there supposed to be another plate for the rest of he dates? Or are all versions of the book only 11 plates?

    Thanks

My 1986 reprint of the Revised 1956 Edition has 11 plates, ending in 1843. I'm a lightweight, so this might not even be relevant.

    I knew it would happen.
  • The reason why they don't put the plate for the latter years is because there are so many different varieties that are so similar that the plates would be pictures of practically the same coin. Unfortunately, one must go off of the descriptions of the minute details that are given for these years.

Unfortunately when I dispersed my Middle Date collection I also dispersed all my associated literature so I kinda lost track of the issue.
