Buying raw gold is always risky. As far as counterfeits, there are far more Indian counterfeits than Liberty counterfeits. Also, you have to be concerned with buying a cleaned coin. Slabbed gold is the way to go unless you're an expert in this area.

Hope this helps a bit. Why not get a certified one and just crack it out. Not much premium for some in plastic.
