BU Mint coins with missing details ARIZONA COINS

SOMEONE SAID: That's the first I've heard of that one. Die chip, I guess.
I like the extra cactus leaf over the number 0, that has been discussed here.
At the Denver Mint floor tour I went on last Friday as part of the ANA Summer Seminar,
they showed us the dies for the Arizona reverse and I mentioned the extra cactus leaf error.
They said it must be from the Philly Mint since the Denver Mint doesn't make any errors.
I did see a few waffle coins in bins there, tho'

THEN I SAID: sure they make errors....the smooth cactus quarter for sale on Ebay

THEN SOMEONE ELSE SAID: Talk about an infomercial! And I get slammed because I wanted an opinion of a coin that
happened to be on the BST, yet was not even mentioned as being for sale?

Then I copy/pasted all the above, and it became HTML.

So, here is my question for anyone: This smooth cactus arizona quarter is new to me. I have not seen a BU coin without the details in my life. (Can you just imagine if a lincoln cent was minted without the detail in his beard? Or Washington without his ponytail string?

Is this smoothing thing common????
What would cause a smooth-no detail coin such as the one in question???

I pray that this ^$?!%$XX message makes it in English this time.

Thank you for you thoughts.

Fairly common, assuming it was struck through grease.

  • Thanks Grumpy......that's what I was talking about. I don't have much experience with errors esp. grease. That's probably what happened w/the AZ smooth cactus coin.

Here's a followup question which is hopefully sort of on topic relating to the original thread.

For error coins that are struck through grease, I would expect that the grease would be ejected from the dies on the first strike... And thus there would not be a whole lot of error coins such as this and every one would be unique.

Is this true? Struck through grease (and probably most other struck through coins) are one time only things unlike a die crack which progresses and affects a series of coins.
