What the Favre?

Reports are that he will be attending training camp and is prepared to play this upcoming season?!?! I think there's a certain someone in Wisconsin that's a little bit ticked off that he's losing his job without ever getting to do it!

Geez, he has retired twice already. This is getting ridiculous.

He says his family is "tugging" at him to play -- what, they can't stand to have him around the house?

Why am I not the least bit surprised...I always said that Fayre would have to dragged off the field kicking and screaming...unfortunately.

It would've been easier just to change the locks after he left...

Definately ridiculas! But on the other hand its kinda good to have him play another season, he is STILL a great QB and gives Green Bay their best chances... I would not be suprised one bit that him watching Manning lead his team to a Super Bowl win has a whole lot to do with it...

It brings to my mind Mike Schmidt's retirement announcement. It was the classiest and most genuine such announcement I ever heard. This nonsense of retiring and un-retiring repeatedly used to be the exclusive domain of boxers. Now it seems like everyone has gotten into the act. From Irving Fryar to Brett Favre, when a big-name athlete says he is retired my reaction is, "I'll believe it when I see it."

    Who's Fayre Steve? Favre's gay alter-ego?

In a related story, all the guys doing the Favre registry sets get to go after another season's worth of cards.

Just a bad feeling that Favre is going to go out in a simliar manner as Montana. Green Bay will one day windup releasing him and he plays a few seasons, and not very well, for another team - it'll be sad and too many great players hang around too long and Favre it appears to me will be one of them.

Assuming that he does play next year for the Packers- which I think would be a done deal if he returns, he is going back to pretty much the same team that made the NFC championship last year and should have made the Super Bowl ( had their kicker not choked ) instead they lose and watch the Giants beat the Patriots and win it all- coming so close and under the curcumstances of their loss I give Favre a free pass on this one if he returns.

I know earlier I said it was ridiculas but I changed my mind- I cant blame him for wanting another shot.

No I don't "blame" him either - his "personality" that made him a great player willing to put his body through anything to succeed and the adrenaline rush thrill and of course the money which accompanies it...that's a tough thing to just turn off - for many if not most athletes it can't be just turned off as long as some sports franchise owner thinks they can still play, and either win games for them or be a drawing card for them to sell some tickets.

Unfortunately I remember guys like Willie Mays and too many others trying to beat Father Time and hang on too long. Of course this is a bit different because Favre seems still capable of making plays...but I also remember Willie still hit a few home runs his last year...even when most of the time he was overmatched at the plate by most pitchers. When Favre's body finally quits on him, and succumbs to Father Time, it's not going to be a pretty sight.

Agreed 100% Steve, but I cant see him hanging around trying to make another team or even just padding his stats either- this guy ( like you said ) is driven and I truly believe he will know it when he cant play anymore and that will be it. Not to mention if the Pack went 1-15 last year or even 8-8 I dont think we would be having this conversation..
  • sigh.
hang it up old man and retire ON TOP instead of being carted off the field in neck brace.

    perkdog,

hate to break it to you but your memory must be fading fast. it was the giants kicker that missed two fg's in that game not the packers kicker, he made his two.

I completely see what you're saying. But I guess I would have never believed that Joe Montana would play for any team but the 49ers. Favre is a tough guy to figure out - I believe that at the time he says he's retiring he honestly means it, but then he changes his mind for various reasons. I could even see him retiring for a year, and then coming back to play for another team...anythings possible with this guy. You'd just hate to see him windup like a Jim Otto or as Bob said in a neck brace or something like that.

My bad, the Giants missed the FG's and the Packers didnt capitalize on it if I remember correctly? I worked that night so I didnt see it, did the Packers stall a game winning drive then? Either way it was a close game I know that.
  • He is welcome in Minnesota, you can have Tarvar! Wouldnt that be a kick for Packer fan, Favre in PURPLE!

Maybe GB will pass, and Tampa Bay will pick him up. Then maybe TB will have a shot at .500 this year?

<< <i>As far as I'm concerned, Brett Farve's act got old years ago. His behavior over the last several years is one of the most narcisstic displays I've ever witnessed in sports history. I'm not sure that Kobe or Bonds don't play second fiddle to Farve when it comes to "The world revolves around me" syndrome. >>

    Who is Brett Farve?

Jesus, people. He's a first ballot hall of famer who has been around for almost two decades. It can't be that hard to remember how his name is spelled!
