Bad check anyone?

Here's the info : I sold a card on Ebay for $350, buyer pays with a check. Obviously there's going to be a hold on the item sold until the check clears. Well, it didn't. Bank said due to an invalid account. The buyer only has a few feedback, but has gotten 4-5 recently for purchases. Had a good feeling that the check would be good based on his growing positive feedback(then again, as if I could see any negs, right?).

Question to you is, what's the best and mature way to handle this? Email him and tell him if he wants the card it's money order only? Cancel the sale, and if so, with what process? My bank fees got waived, so there's no additional charges other than Ebay/Paypal if I relist the card, so at least the hit is minimal.

Advice is appreciated, and thanks in advance!

    Dear Buyer:

The check you issued for the above referenced transaction could not be cleared for payment by my bank.

If you will simply submit a USPS Money Order in the amount of $XXX, I will ship your item immediately.

    Thank you very much.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • I wouldn't email him but I would get his info from Ebay and give him a phone call(if it's not on the check). Who knows he may have really changed banks and accidentally used the old checks. It has been done before. Depending on what state he lives in a bad check written that high may be a felony and the buyer may want to take care of it as quick as possible.
  • I wrote a check for an item, think it was a 1963 Mantle PSA 7, last summer because my Paypal account was temporarily disabled. Before anyone asks, I refused to add money to cover a Paypal dispute I lost despite DC. I digress. I used a check from an old business account which I had just closed and re-opened a new account at the same bank. I had bought quite a few times before from the same seller so he did not hold the check as he usually would. Of course the check was made of rubber but it was an honest mistake.
