This is a 5 ducat piece from Saxony. It is fully original and dated 1630. Struck in Geman State of Saxony.

It is PCGS graded 58, a pop 1.

It was struck to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession

I have a Saxon piece minted under Frederick the Wise, the Elector of Saxony who protected Martin Luther from Charles V. Your piece is also a very cool link to the Reformation!

Can you tell which is the obverse and which is the reverse?

Rhetorical question, if there were a coin forum in 1630, would this gold commmemorative been considered 'modern crap'?

Awesome coin with a great story. I'd guess many of the other strikes would be in museums. Thanks for displaying it. Is it yours?

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

It's a lovely piece, but I would think that for an issue like this, most known specimens are not certified, and that the pop ranking is a lot less meaningful than the total estimated population and the history of auction sales of different examples.

Have you looked when the last high grade piece came to auction?

Nope. But that info - whatever it is - would mean a lot more to me than the PCGS pop.

I think your right, most known pieces are not certified.

The last 5 ducat of this type I found at auction was desribed raw as a good VF and went for $3900 in 2002.

No, it would have been called 'níwe droge'.
