Why I put my sets on the PCGS Registry.

OK, this may seem silly and stupid, but it's my attempt to defend my meager set ranking.

Does your wife or girlfriend appreciate your coin collection? What about your friends and neighbors? Do they recognize the hard work and money you've put toward your hobby? Or do they think you're just a nutcase obsessed with spending money? That's how most of my friends and family are. To me the Registry is an opportunity to share my collection with people who can actually appreciate it: the felllow coin collector.

I don't think I will ever have a #1 set in any category. I'd be surprised if I even reached the top ten in most categories. But I don't really even care. As long as somebody can pull up my set and realize that I've gone to some effort to put it together, you can count me as a satisfied participant. It shouldn't be so much comparing your collection to see if you're better than somebody than it should be sharing the fruits of your labor with other people.

Anybody care to comment/disagree/slander/etc?

I think that your reason is as good as any. It gives you a sense of community with other collectors, and also sparks the competitive spirit a bit. Nothing wrong with that. If it helps to justify the expenses involved in this hobby to your spouse and family, well then it is a REALLY good idea

I agree with all of the above and the following:

My collections are a work in progress and I use the registry as an active want list, many fellow collectors and dealers have helped to fill in the gaps.

Sometimes I actually get a little bored with a series, so I'll move from my Lincoln cents to Mercs, to quarter eagles etc. The Registry brings some excitement to the collection and helps to push me (and my wallet) to obtain the best coins I can afford and to finish the collection.

I also never would have started a US type set. The registry has opend my eyes and horizons to all of the othe coinage that this great country has produced since 1793. There are some beautiful coins out there and I hope to have one of each.

MH, I was glad too see you come on to the Commem. Registry with your set, this is good for everyone, especially Braddick and Higashiyama as they will be happy they have been pushed further to the bottom--------------------BigE

You are absolutely right. It is difficult to convince the non-collector on how cool our coins are. The registry gives us the chance to show other collectors our collections from the privacy of our computers.

I agree with the above. In addition, it's a great inventory aid that can accessed when traveling.

Not only is the sharing fun, but the competition helps you focus on where improvements need to be may. I find upgrading after a set is complete is tough but would be much worse without the registry.

Many points in common here. It's correct that no one,other than other collectors, appreciates the coins and effort (fun) needed to complete your collection. I joined last week not to advertise, but to participate. I'm in 30th spot with my collection and that's fine. The guy in 20th has 35 Proof 70 coins so I'm no threat to him. I enjoy seeing the coins of my fellow collectors and I DO appreciate the work they put into it.

I agree with all of the above PLUS I truly enjoy seeing pictures of the coins in people's registry set collections. I don't know why I have this crazy addiction, but when I think of the other types of pictures I could be looking for on the Internet...I'm glad I like coins!

I like you put my babies in the registry for the same reason.I also wanted to see how I stacked up to others.I also found that it helped me focus on one series.

It really has helped me focus on a common goal. When I couldn't see where I stood/my results I often bought coins out of the series or ones that I really didn't want/need. Having competition plays into this too.
