Guess what!? We FINALLY started our 1971 Topps set quest with my wife's favorite, Carl Yastrzemski!
As you guys know, 1975 is and will always be my all-time favorite 1970s set. But now that we got that all but wrapped up (we only like Fred Lynn and Bob Gibson HL in PSA 7), our attention is now turned to my second favorite set, 1971!
Now, I know I already posted a topic about this a couple months back, but I'm making a new one here because we have now offically started our 1971 journey. My wife says we should have $2000 or so for the set (which will be my Christmas for this year of course) come late August or early September. And we have started the journey with who else? My wife's all-time favorite baseball player:
Our 1971 Topps journey begins here, with my wife's hero in PSA 7!
How we're going to do the remaining 751 cards is that I want to get all the cards that book for $25 or more and all the non hi-series that book for $8 or more (I am considering doing ALL the HOFers in PSA 7 however) in the Beckett Almanac in PSA 7 NQ:
(cards in italics are pending)
005 Thurman Munson solo RC $120
020 Reggie Jackson $50
100 Pete Rose $50
250 Johnny Bench $50
341 Steve Garvey RC $40
400 Hank Aaron $60
513 Nolan Ryan $150
525 Ernie Banks $50
600 Willie Mays $100
630 Roberto Clemente $150
640 Frank Robinson $40
709 Don Baylor/Dusty Baker RC $80
-----------------------------------------------------------
160 Tom Seaver $30
550 Harmon Killebrew $25
570 Jim Palmer $30
648 Ted Martinez $25
650 Rich Allen $30
688 Sparky Anderson $30
700 Boog Powell $25
740 Luis Aparico $30
750 Denny McClain $25
---------------------------------------------------
001 World Champions $20
014 Dave Conception RC $15
020 Bert Blyleven RC $20
050 Willie McCovey $10
117 Ted Simmons RC $8
180 Al Kaline $20
210 Rod Carew $15
230 Willie Stargell $15
264 Joe Morgan $8
276 George Foster RC $8
300 Brooks Robinson $20
325 Juan Marichal $8
360 Billy Williams $8
380 Ted Williams MGR $12
450 Bob Gibson $15
543 Yankees TC $10
574 Jim Bunning $8
580 Tony Perez $10
605 Orlando Cepeda $8
609 Leo Durocher MGR $8
------------------------------------------
054 Checklist 1 $10
123 Checklist 2 $10
161 Checklist Coins $10
206 Checklist 3 $10
369 Checklist 4 $10
499 Checklist 5 $10
619 Checklist 6 $10
-------------------------------------------
(I don't know yet if I want to get this group graded or not):
030 Phil Niekro $6
045 Catfish Hunter $6
110 Bill Mazeroski $6
117 Ted Simmons RC $6
140 Gaylord Perry $6
188 Bobby Valentine RC $6
248 Hoyt Wilhelm $6
264 Joe Morgan $6
276 George Foster $6
280 Ferguson Jenkins $6
361 Don Sutton $6
384 Rollie Fingers $6
465 Tim McCarver $6
477 Earl Weaver $6
535 Curt Flood $6
At least getting the graded cards should be the easy part. The hard part however, comes with getting the rest of the set in raw form (NO, I am not going for all the set graded; it'd be way too expensive and frankly, I don't think it'd be much fun to look at unless the non-keys were in good ol' fashioned binder/pages). Now what would be the best way to get the remaining raw set? Like for example, are there dealers that specialize in filling wantlists or making "starter sets" (like Bill "King of the Commons" Henderson)? And of course, I'll need to watch out for recoloring/doctoring jobs with this set too of course (all the more reason I'm getting the keys in PSA 7).
I have always wanted this set too but until now, I never thought we could come close to affording it. I guess my recent raise from work should help matters, eh? Anyhoo, if you guys got any of the above listed in PSA 7 (a large group purchase would be especially welcome; save on shipping that way) and/or can make a super nice NRMT or better near set (omitting the key cards) for when we get the cash in late August/early September, please give me a holler! This is our most exciting, biggest project yet and I'm estatic that we've now offically started it!

I guess just one down, 751 more to go, eh? Or in the case of the graded cards, I'm one for 63 so far. Remember, I can't afford to do ALL the cards graded, but I'll have pretty much all the HOFers, checklists, and big cards graded, so that's the most important thing anyway, right?
