PSA vintage cards tanking?

I have been trying to put together a 63 Baseball graded set for the last two years. When I started this endeavor I had about 150 cards that I sent out to get graded. The rest are coming mainly from Ebay. The typical PSA 8 common I couldnt touch for under $22 two years ago. I picked up 6 PSA 8 commons a few days ago for under 10 bucks. It seems like for the last 8 months or so the price has tanked on these cards. I am wondering if anyone else is noticing the same thing on their vintage buying or is it just me? I am guessing the economy has alot to do with this, but that really is a big drop.....

I've picked up very nice buys recently on graded and raw on ebay. It's been very good for a guy looking to expand his collection. As long as my bids hold up, I'm buying(to the point of my wife screaming like a banshee).

I think many, such as myself, are rethinking and becoming more focused on what they collect. It's going to make lots of stuff available at better prices when they are on the auction block. Economy is sucking right now and all due to the rising price of oil.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm $22 for this beauty or???? fill my car to half........decisions, decisions. Yes prices have gone down dramaticly as money is being diverted from ebay.

I wish I could agree, but for the sets I am working on (vintage football), prices are as strong (or stronger) than they have been for the past year.

I really don't pay very close attention to that segment of the market, but I would think most 8's from the mid-50s and on are going to have a hard time holding their value. Obviously the economic climate is not helping, but the increase in supply is likely outpacing any influx of new collectors. Obviously there's a finite supply of cards, but the population of PSA 8's for the overwhelming majority of cards from, say, the era of the Topps monopoly is going to rise for some time.

Not that I collect for profit or anything, but I'm sure we'd all like to at least break even should we decide to cash out at some point. I kinda worry about that in the long-term since card collecting has very little hold on the minds, time and money of today's kids.

  • I think less people are set collecting these days, and more HOF auto or rookie collecting...JMO
  • Take it what it's worth, but I always search ebay by "psa" and then click baseball. About a month ago, I happened to see a 1968 Topps common PSA 9 with a few minutes left at $6. Decided to throw in a $15 max bid and move on. Won it for $12 w/shipping.

You paid less then 2.00 each?

Looking at the completed auctions for several '60 Topps bb psa 8's and comparing their prices on vintagecardprices.com, they seem to be doing as well on average as they were a year ago, with some selling lower and some selling higher. All sets see their prices fluctuate as people enter/leave the marketplace, but I haven't noticed graded cards tanking across the board.

'68 Topps haven't been worth grading for a long time unless they're low pops or star cards. They're much too easy to find in high grade.

Also, prices are always lower in the summer.

That was my first thought as well, but I think he meant under $10 each.
  • I said a couple of months ago if you can find em cheap now is the time to buy.

Market tanking? Hardly. I am at the Houston Tri Star Show and prices are higher than ever. Mr. Flintboy, what you didn't realize with your good deals the other day is that you won 1983 PSA 8 commons, not 1963..........

It's all cyclical, like anything else. Prices lag in the summer a bit. Great time to buy.

Prices do fall every summer, but I expect the high gas prices to keep prices down through fall.

I've been making selective purchase myself, but most collectors I know have been cutting back. In LA, the market is also being affected by the poor housing market. I've seen a lot of people dumping their collections to raise cash. Most of it is junk, but I saw a guy trying to sell his large autograph memorbilia collection at a show recently to any dealer that would take it.

I track the value of my collection through VCP. It is all baseball, mostly PSA 8s from 59-71. It is down about 9% from its peak 3-4 months ago. I have about 3500 graded from that period.

that you won 1983 PSA 8 commons, not 1963.........

That explains the 2.00 per card issue then.

1983 is not vintage by the way.

Hell some might say 1963 is not as well.

Vintage for me is 1961 and lower. I stay away from 62's because of the wood borders. chaz

Like mentioned it is summer time and people have other things to do then work on collections.

Add in the fact that the economy stinks right now and of course prices will be down on average stuff.

Put up some hard to find cards and the market will respond.

Me? I have 100 nice 1950's cards that I will wait for the summer to end before I sell again.

    Good for you.
  • Sorry guys, I meant I bought 6 diffrent PSA8,s at around $10.00 a piece......
  • soft market in the summer months, plus high gas and commodities prices. Economy is Sh1t@y, job market questionable. scoop up the cheap deals and enjoy.
