Who here collects mainly 70's cards?

As much as I try to get into "true" vintage cards (1960's and older) it seems that I keep buying 70's cards. Maybe it is because those are the players I watched growing up.

Anyone else here have the same quandry? How about you 80's collectors? Do you try to buy older stuff but ultimately return to your old buying habits?

I primarily prefer pre 1970, but I buy 1970's and up Cincy Reds (lately it's been Morgan, Foster, and Perez)

When I first started collecting complete sets (1999-2000) I wanted to get 80s because that's the decade I grew up in. Well, I got that pretty much wrapped up along with most of the 90s sets so I've also been working on 70s sets also. In a couple months I hope to get started on the ultimate 70s set, 1971! image

  • Despite my moronic quest to build all the 80s sets in MINT condition, I am also slowly working on all the 70s sets raw abd graded. I am probably about 40-50% complete with each one accept the 79 set.

Nothing moronic about building 80's sets! Good for you. I was just wondering if anyone else goes back to their comfort zone in buying as I seem to do.

Stingray, those 76's you have been buying are sharp. A cool set.

I do! I do! I have all the Topps regular baseball sets from 1970 through the present, but I focus my attention (and money) exclusively to my 1970's sets. I am constantly upgrading 1970-1975. If the day ever arrives when I'm satisfied with those, I'll get crackin' on '76-'79. So I would really appreciate it if you guys would be kind enough to leave some of those for me. image

For me, the '70's sets hold the fondest memories and better represent MLB when it was (at least in my opinion) a better quality game.

My boys and I need 300-350 cards for our raw sets (1974-1979 sets)... we have 2000-3000 duplicates to trade as well.

Our complete wantlist is posted in the Vintage Trading Forum.... please let us know if you can help.

I'm doing 70's Red Sox sets from 72-78. One day I may do the 70/71 and 79 but I can't stand the look of the 79 set and 70/71 can get pricey in PSA 8 or better.

I do, I do, with a major obsession for all things Topps 1971.

Born in 1962, first packs I can remember buying are 1970 FB cello packs. Have complete 1969 thru 1979 sets for baseball and basketball, only 1969 thru 1974 for football.

Oh, also have at least one wax, cello and rack pack for each year in the 1970's for baseball. Just need a 1970 FB rack to complete the same for 70-74 football.

I guess that I do. I have completed the following PSA graded sets in the past, they have all be sold or traded except the 78 set, but I keep going back to the "well".

    1976 Topps Basketball
    1972 Topps Hockey
    1971 Topps Hockey
    1970 Topps Hockey
    1971 Fleer Globetrotters Cocoa Puffs

    Partially completed the following:

Well, I certainly appreciate all my 1980s sets more since I bought them circa 1988-1991. But I LOVE my 1970s unopened packs!

I love 70s cards and collect cards only from that decade which is the decade I grew up in. I am working on PSA sets from 1971-1980, but it's obviously slow going. You can still get PSA 9s from the 70s (with notable low pop exceptions) for less than the cost of grading and unopened product for several of those years is still relatively cheap.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

    I collect mostly 70's. Completed 1974 - 1976, and 78. 1973 almost complete, just need a PSA 7 or 8 Schmidt. Currently working on 1970.
Collecting Clemente master (#6) and basic PSA registry sets, Hank Aaron master and basic sets, Mantle oddball issues, 1970's mega decade HOFs, 1967 Topps pin ups, and high grade Topps Clemente and Aaron. Numerous transactions with over 100 board members.

    << <i>My 70's display case >>

    Love the RC cansimage

I go back and forth. I have Registry Braves team sets as old as '63 and as recent as '76. I also have more recent cards in the form of Player Sets. I try not to get into any sort of rut and have the pursuit start to seem like work. And I don't object to having numerous irons in the fire at any one time. In fact, I kind of like it that way.

Ya I've mostly collected 70s stuff.

Bobby Orr, Thurman Munson and my favorite guy Reg Leach.

I'm putting together sets of OPC 73 Hockey in PSA and 79 OPC Baseball raw. I've also been collecting some unopened Baseball from the 70s.

Lowsy baby boomers keep the 50s and 60s stuff kinda tough, lol.

John, nice looking packs thanks for sharing. I would be so tempted to open them even though it would be difficult to justify.
