What are some auction houses that have websites that deal with big time game used sports equipment? Second, if by chance a Sammy Baugh game used jersey were to become available for auction how much would one realistically have to pay out to win something like that?

Memory Lane and REA come to mind, I'm sure there are others as well. With something that nice and the right provenance I would think you would pay little or no consignor fees.

Value? More than I have. Depends on the quality, provenance, and what game it is from. More information would get you more accurate "guesses".

For what its worth here is my game used Jersey story and why I will never purchase one. This was awhile ago and I forget the Ebay seller on this item. I am friends with Randy White and stumbled across an Ebay auction with a game used jersey of his. I told him that one of his game used jerseys is on Ebay and if he wanted it, I would try and contact the seller and they could try and work it out if he was interested. He told me that none of his game used jerseys exist. I asked him if he had any memoribilia from his playing days. He told me he kept the only two helmets he used in his career, the University of Maryland has one and a mutual friend has the other one. He was really adamant that none of his game used jerseys are out there.The funny thing was that I remember the jersey being up to over a grand at the time with plenty of days left in the auction. After talking with him I swore never to purchase "game used."

Probably not an isolated case as I'm sure there are many so-called game-used items out there that are bogus...

but on a positive note, my sons and I have inherited, from my father and also have obtained in person, quite a few game-worn and/or game-used items from all sorts or professional athletes over the years.

Mickey Mantle - game-used shoes (actually acquired through Barry Halper)
Ken Griffey Jr - game-used cap (from him personally)
Johnny Mize - game-used glove (from him personally)
George Kell - game-used glove (from him personally)
Andre Agassi - game-worn wristband (from him personally)
Pete Rose - game-used jersey (from him personally at Golds Gym Forest Park Ohio 1988)

I'd be more worried about game-used jersey cards etc..... just the thought of ripping up a Babe Ruth game-used bat or Mickey Mantle game-worn jersey, makes me sick.

Problem is how can Randy be certain that some of his jerseys did not slip out of the locker room after the game? I find it hard to believe he can account for every GU jersey he ever wore, unless he personally burnt them after the game or took them all home and they are still in a closet somewhere.

You may be 100% correct. My point was that I would hate to buy a game used jersey, have a guy sign it or show it to him and have him tell me it isnt game used.

I agree with others that ebay can be a suspicious place to biuy anything considered "authentic." However I think a good auction house might be a good place. What's sad is most Baugh game used jersies that he doesn't currently own himself may either be long since trashed or chopped up into ballcard swatches.

Jimq, what is REA? Is that the name of the auction place itself or just the initials?

Am I looking at $15-20k for an item like a real Baugh used jersey?

One helmet for his Pro career?? I can believe that.

No one can keep track of the uniforms they used. Thats the equipment managers job, and he sells the older ones out the back door.

A high % of Game Used Modern stuff is a sham, players wear the item for one hour, sign it, and off it goes to the auction house. But if you go back pre 1975 or so there really isnt much fake game used stuff out there. Older game used stuff is not too plentiful, they were used til they wore out then given away (rarely sold).
Some older players may have used 2 sets of uniforms for an entire season, modern players may use 2 dozen uniforms for a season if not more (mainly because of the value ea. item will bring at auction).
