Cool Story about finding a coin

My wife and I are renting a little place on a little remote lake here in upstate NY. Saturday I am out with my daughter and son 6 and 2 respectively just throwing rocks into the lake. She wants to me to skip stones for her and we start looking for that perfect flat stone. I notice in about 12 in of water a small stone that looks to round to be a stone. I figure at a glance it is just a steel slug or something like that. I pick it up and darned if it isn't a large cent penny from 1834. Pretty rough front but the back is in pretty good shape I would say. Just a cool little story. I might go an get an under water metal detector, if I can find one to borrow or rent for a day, just for fun and see what else might be there.

I've heard before that a lot of coins were lost/thrown etc from boats going thru the erie canal, were you anywhere near that? One of my friends found a $20 gold coin about 30 years ago near the canal, one side was great and one side crap.
I hope you do better than he did, his parents took it to a coin store and they sold it for $50 to the store owner.
