Why did the percentage required go up?
I have noticed some large sets over 75% complete and in the lead that will get no recognition for the work put in.
Others are over 60% or better but, will not get recognized.
Anyone know the reason?
Here a a few sets that now one will win, unless more coins are added in the next week to bring their percentages up.
There are many more sets that are in the same situation, just listing these three sets.
This one had a 2007 award and now will not qualify...
U.S. Dimes Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1796-present)
U.S. Dollars Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1794-present)
U.S. $20 Gold Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1850-1932)
Yet another that won in 2007 but, now will be short @ 80.95% complete....
Flowing Hair and Draped Bust Half Dollars with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1794-1807)

The requirement of 85% sounds reasonable to me At least PCGS isn't making it a requirement of 100%
If the set pulled a "Top Set" award in the last year or more, then let it ride.
Some of these classic sets are amazing.
For the Presidential Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (2007-2016)
There are ONLY (7) sets that qualify at the 85% complete stage.
There are (55) coins required for 2007, one massive set!
Lots of low pop coins makes it tough to go around to all the sets.

I talked to BJ about this and she said the reason was because of the increased number of sets. They don't want to have to look at that many sets and give out that many awards. My feeling is that on the BIG sets like the Complete sets of denoms and such should not have to have 85%. She said that she would bring it up in a meeting prior to the awards decisions.
I personally feel that the top set in any series should get the award for that year unless it is a really low percentage that someone started because they had ONE coin that would go in.
I am not complaining on my behalf because this year I'm not in first anyway. Larry Martin passed me with his great set of Dimes several months ago. And I think he should get the award for this year.
JMHO
The complete sets are massive and takes a lot of dedication to get to the percentages you guys have achieved.
Great Achievements!
PS: Didn't PCGS just increase the number of sets recently?
Most sets had one now they have Basic, Major and Complete.
One would assume more awards were forthcoming.

<< <i>This nice set of fractionals - Only has 84% complete - Awards 2004,2005,2006 & 2007 ...2008 NOT! >>
It is a nice set, no doubt. But the rules should be consistant, and evenly enforced over all sets. If 85% completion is the limit, then that is what the requirement is. No sense crying about it, if the set is 84.9% complete then it does not count for the awards this year.
It would not bother me if PCGS changed the rule to 95% or 100% completion, as long as it was consistant across all sets and notice was given to the collectors. My son and I collect for our own enjoyment and we try to upgrade when ever possible, if we get an award fine, if we don't - no problem.
85% of some of the COMPLETE SETs is a very tall order.
I've said it before & I'll say it again, EMS' U.S. Cents Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1793-present) is freekin' incredible!
Maybe the larger sets should have a minimum number of coins....100?....irregardless of percentage of completion.
I personally feel that the top set in any series should get the award for that year unless it is a really low percentage that someone started because they had ONE coin that would go in.
Hey, I resemble that remark.....1852 Mint Set
<< <i>Personally the reqirements should drop as the set gets larger.

Jim,
Good point. If enough low pop coins get added and they get spread out among many collectors, it will become impossible for anyone to have a qualifying set. Perhaps a better rule would be the xx sets with the highest completion percentage will be considered. Perhaps 20 would be a good number for xx.

In 2008, we have raised to the bar to 85% completion, although rare sets under 85% will always be considered for major awards. For more information on the 2008 awards, click here:

So, they will still have some chance for major awards, just not the little 2008 icon.
