What is a Reverse Wheel mark?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
Sent a coin to NGC, and I saw on their website that one didnt grade due to a Reverse Wheel mark. Anyone know what this is?
The coin is a very NT 1964 kennedy half.

A wheel mark is a small scuff on the coin that can occur when the coin goes through a counting machine. A rotating wheel in the machine propels the coins through, and when the wheel comes in contact with the coin it can leave a mark. A reverse wheel mark means it was on the reverse of the coin.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Does anyone have a pic of a wheel mark?

  • If you want to learn more about wheel marks, check out this WYNTK post by Supertooth and Mark Feld. Link

The best way to see a wheel mark on a coin is with a halogen lamp.

A picture of Supertooth's coin from the post. Mark had a great picture to but its no longer there.

  • My friend 50 cents has it absolutely correct. The area that he has circled is "shinny". If the coin is placed under halogen lighting----and tilted---it becomes readily apparent that the circled area is a wheel mark. That area is brought out with the halogen lighting as being brighter and shinier in appearance.

Neither Mark Feld or myself could see that area with just our eyes or with regular lighting. Even under a loupe it was NOT apparent. Only when Mark put it under the halogen light did it show up---and he then gratiously passed this information on to me.

As you can see, the coin is a wonderful "original skinned" MS Walker. The wheelmark finally put it into an ANACS holder. Bob [supertooth]
