official 80's-2000's errors and others discussion thread

So after being lOCKED in my "sorting vault" (simlar to Superman's chamber) I decided to start a thread deciated to all of the crap I collected as a kid which is worthless. There is still value in some of these! A few Hof'er some minor stars and tons of memories in these years. Anyways I wanted to rehash some of the errors, varations and cards that may still be worth something today.

I noticed Hof'er of Bruce Sutter, Carlton Fisk, and Sparky Anderson

Errors 1982 topps blackless, 1988 Keith Comstock white letter, and I think there are like 15 1991 topps wierd back variations with decimal points..etc. What weird errors were there in the 80's?

In that same 88 topps set, remember the weird record breaker variations? The Mark McGwire RB variation had a white triangle by his foot. And the Eddie Murray variation had the black box containing a description of the record he broke.

TM and no TM versions of the AS cards in '87 Topps, yellow names in '80 Topps and the image shift variations on the Future Stars in '89.

There are plenty more, but I don't recall the others offhand.

The 1988 Al Leiter card was pretty cool. Anyone remember the name of the player originally featured on Leiter's card?
  • MeteoriteGuyMeteoriteGuy Posts: 7,140 ✭✭
I remember all of them, and they were some of my favorite. Every Beckett or Tuff Stuff would have a couple new errors to look for.

I liked the many other 1988 Topps errors as well and the 1989 Upper Deck reverse photo cards.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.

Steve George is the player on the first version of Al Leiter's card.

'82 Fleer and Donruss had reversed negative errors - the Fleer Littlefield is still very expensive.

'85 Donruss Terry Pendleton card originally listed his first name as Jeff.

'84 Donruss Ron Darling and Mike Stenhouse originally came out without the card numbers on the back.

'82 Topps Blueless all appear to be handcut. To me, that's not a variation, but printer's scrap sheets that someone later cut apart.

  • I liked the 1983 Donruss Ron Jackson A's/Angels error, the 1982 Donruss Phil Garner reverse negative, the 1982 Donruss Juan Eichelberger error and a few other of the donruss/fleer errors that were in 82-83, which are escaping me right now.

I found this online. unsure of year of manufacturer, possibly UD

"...#270 Mark McGwire. One version has "1987 SLG .618" where the other version has "1987 SLG 618". The period is missing from the slugging percentage number.

The ones that have different pictures (the rest are either stat variations or color/logo variations) are:

#279 Jose Gonzalez. Correct version shows right handed batter. Incorrect version shows left handed batter (Billy Bean)

#588 Mark Whiten. Correct version has hand inside left border. Incorrect version has his hand outside the border.

#603 Wes Chamberlain. Correct version has photo with player holding bat. The incorrect photo is Louie Meadows and he is not holding a bat.

Vernon Wells's rookies are 1997 - Bowman, Bowman Chrome, and perhaps others.
I think Carlos Pena's rookie was 1999 Topps Traded.
