Script Is Allegedly Being Used To Win Card Auctions At Opening Bid

Interested card sellers should look through the entire menu.
Some of the vids are missing audio, and some are not clear
in the instructions.

The bottom line is that a piece of free script allegedly allows
EvilBAYers to block ALL of the other bidders that may wish to win
the cards you have listed.

This results in an item being "won" at the minimum listing bid.

Obviously, this would be an improper/illegal bidding tactic.

EBAY says they are "looking into" the problem.

Today, EBAY announced that before XMAS, all active script
not provided by EBAY will be disallowed from listings.

This will block ALL third-party providers - like Auctiva - from
linking to the site. Third-party checkout can be negotiated
with EBAY, if a seller does $500K per month or sells 50K
items per month; everybody else will use ebaycheckout.

If they can accomlish this, they should be able to prevent
hackers from using script to "win" $100 cards for 99-cents.

That would suck! I like using inkfrog; why would eBay torture me to move all of my data to something else!?!

EBAY wants you to buy their "photo hosting" services.

auctionbytes.com is covering EBAY-Live..... in person.

Ina Steiner and one other blogger. Her feed is on RSS.

    Notes:

    Right Now.... 4 PM CST

The "new links policy is on hold." The July 1 deadline has been extended.

"Don't make photo link changes until we get back to you."

"You can start removing your email addresses from GTC store listings."
(July 1 may still be the deadline on that.)

ALL emails addys will be anon/hidden. AFTER a sale, the email reveals.

    /////////

The href tags in the photobucket code are the problem.
The pics in PB offer several options; the "legal" one will be
the img src data WITHOUT the href markup.

If Auctiva pics have an href tag, it will have to be removed.

Those tags may have to be removed one at a time, and
replaced with the non-site-linking code. (They want folks to
see the picture, but not be able to cruise through PB/Auctiva.)??????

ALL of that is speculation, based on EBAY just now saying
they are still trying to figure out what to do. In any case,
July 1 is no longer the deadline to delete listings.

They still want to ban the links; especially the tp-checkouts.
But, it will be phased in.

The original plan was 1% by July 1. 100% by November.

Ina is live blogging and updates every few minutes with
whatever the nitwits are saying in the workshops.

    ////////////////////////////////////////////

This morning, a guy at the Auctiva booth said they expect
to be invited to "mirror" a version of their site on EBAY. He
said scrolling may not be compatible with the new pages,
but that he expected some kind of picture hosting would
    be fine.

    Nope.

It was first announced on May 19, and there have been ongoing updates.
More details were given at the opening session of EL, and the workshops
    are now running in Chicago.

The site itself has been offering some sort of bittorrent speed up program, that is actually just a trojan that dumps a browser hijack on your computer.

Do you seriously think that the script will do what it says it will? The site that offers it seems to primarly be interested in tricking people into downloading trojans.

I did some development for a Miva Merchant module (open-source, off the shelf shopping cart software) that tied into Ebay. There are tools available for developers to use to allow you to build your own 'my ebay' type of page, and to create listings though your own forms. I got laid off from that job as it was nearing completion, but was always curious what else one might be able to do with it. I think you could write your own bidder-block function for your own items. It might be that there was a security hole there that allows you to block other auctions. Which is scary in all sorts of ways.
