Alameda, Cal. show tomorrow. Anyone going?

Skyman and I are going to attend.

If anyone else is going, pipe up now. A little food, a little show and tell and little socializing before cruising the bourse is a good thing.

Thanks for the Reminder. I may just show up!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Yes, I will definitely be going. Is it at the high school again?

From the SJ coin club website:

Location: ALAMEDA HIGH SCHOOL (The Show is located at the Boys/Girls Gymnasium at the corner of Central Avenue and Oak Street)
2200 Central Avenue (1 block from Park Street)

Kevin and I are planning on meeting at 10:45 if anyone would like to join us...

  • so how about a report ? I couldn't go i already spent my allowance. Any good deals ?
Why do you have to 'put your two cents in'... but it's only a 'penny for your thoughts'? Where's that extra penny going to?

My understanding was that for the dealers the show was a total snore. Not much business going down.

The show was pretty small, but it was nice to socialize with a couple of people. Kevin (Sanction II) and I got together for lunch. He showed me a variety of coins that he had picked up in the last couple of months including some early copper large cents, a variety of Lincolns and a couple of cameo dimes (1958 and 1966), all of which were fun to look at. I particularly liked the cameo dimes. At the show a friend of mine from a local coin club introduced me to another toner collector. The other collector specialized in toned Spanish Colonial and Latin American pieces. He had some GLORIOUS coins. He also had probably the nicest toned NT 1921 Peace dollar I've ever seen (album toning), although unfortunately it had a mediocre strike.

For a dinky little show, I saw a variety of things that appealed to me. There was a nice looking PCGS MS65FBL 1959-D envelope toned Franklin. The dealer wanted $300, which certainly was in the ballpark, but still about $50 too high. If I had not bought another toner 1959-D in the last couple of months for my set I'd probably have bought it. There were a couple of 1883 proof Shield nickels, NGC PR66 (with really nice obverse contrast) and PCGS PR65CAMEO, that would have looked very nice in the old Type Set, and a seriously obverse contrasted 1942 PCGS PR66 Walker that all tempted me, but I decided to save my money on all 3 as there are some items coming up for sale in some auctions. I did buy one thing, a very nice put together raw 1954 proof set. It cost twice graysheet, but all three silver pieces are clean and seriously contrasted and all should at a MINIMUM grade pr65cameo. The cent also has a shot at cameoing, but that's a little more iffy. I doubt I'll send any of them in for grading until I eventually decide to sell the set, as they look really nice together.

So, it was not a big show by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a fun way to spend the day.

    Here is my show report.

I went primarily to socialize. Met Skyman and had lunch with him while doing show and tell. I showed him a 1958 Proof cameo dime and a 1966 SMS cameo dime I recently cherrypicked, two early large cents (1794 and 1798/7) I recently acquired and my Dansco Lincoln album. He brought numerous of his 1957 and 1958 mint set toners (just gorgeous coins). Always nice to see Skyman and his coins.

I snooped around the bourse and saw many of the Nor Cal regulars who attend Nor Cal shows (both dealers and collectors). I chatted with John Russell and told him I would attend the next Diablo Coin Club meeting in August. I bought five raw Lincolns to upgrade my Dansco (3 Memorials and 2 wheats, specifically a 1930 S and a 1935 D, both MS 64, maybe 65 and fully red). Also bought a 1957 proof set in OGP that has a hazed over half with a DCAM reverse. I thought maybe the obverse would also have a cameo look, but after removing the half, I found that the obverse at best to be a very light cameo and at worst to be brilliant. So no I have a 1957 one sided DCAM half. Anyone want to buy the set for my cost ($22.00) plus shipping?

I saw many dealers loaded up with 1909 Lincolns of all types (plain and VDB, Philly and SF) ranging from good to MS. Though a very popular date in a very popular series, under no circumstances can these coins be considered rare. Even at this small show they were everywhere.

A fun way to spend a few hours yesterday, with the best part being socializing.

    Thanks for the report fella's!

I decided not to go simply because of the price of gas and the fact that its so frigging hot here in California, I just did not want to go outside!

    Were there any IKE's?

Sorry you did not make it to the show. I brought my Dansco IKE album thinking to show it to you if you showed up. I picked up the album a couple of years ago. It was assembled in the late 1970's by Paramount Coin and sold to the collector I acquired it from. The coins in the album have toned somewhat, with a variety of toning color and looks. Some of the coins are very nice (IMO) and some are so, so (IMO). However, I have little knowledge on IKE's and do not know if I have an album filled with Gems, an album filled with low end pieces or an album with a little of both. I also do not know if any varieties are in the album. What I do know is that the coins in the album have been together for a long, long time now and when viewed under good lighting, many of the coins have lots of eye appeal.

If you are local to the SF Bay area, we should meet some time.

I did not attend the show this year since I was in San Antonio, TX on Sunday. I have had a table at this show several times in the past, and with the exception of one year, my sales at this show have never been strong enough to even cover the cost of the bourse table ($80 or so). In other words, I can sell more coins out of the office on a Sunday than I could by being set up at that show.

There are plenty of coin shows in the area, and not attending a few here and there isn't going to cause any mental anguish.

I ended up going sailing. I had planned to attend as the show is only one mile away from me but the sun and the wind beckoned image
