Grading question

Hi everyone, I just ripped a 84 cello pack this morning and came up with this Strawberry card. The back is very well centered and here is the front. I was wondering for future reference about wax stains. This card has a wax stain or a blem right next to the "S" in Mets. I wasn't planning on slabbing this card, I was just wanting to know for down the road. How much does that deduct if I were to grade a card like this one assuming what the grade would be without a stain or blem.

As always, thanks for everyones input!

Take a piece of nylon (panty hose) and rub the wax stain off. Typically with the front surface of cards, this works well.

Be sure to take them off first. You would look pretty funny sitting on your couch rubbing cards on your legs.
  • I play "footsy" with my wax-stained cards.

You may want to try used dryer sheets, as well.

Considering it was a Cello, I doubt that he's actually talking about a removable wax stain. I think what he is describing is one of those imperfections where there is something in the card stock that causes a bump OR one of those stains that often bleeds from the front and the back.

Very true! I was saying wax stain as example, but I guess it's misleading for this card. The blem does seem to be a slight bump or something that got into the ink. So if it doesn't come out which I don't think it will, what does it deduct from a card. I'm asking this because I have some older cards fresh from rips with similar wax blems or printing stains.

Sorry to sound so vague, but it really depends on the severity of the blem, the location, and how much it is noticed. I've seen cards with subsurface blems that would otherwise be in MINT holders graded as low as EX-MT. I've seen others end up in PSA 8's. Typically it seems to hit the card at a level similar to a qualifier. If the card would otherwise be a PSA 9, it would not be uncommon to see it end up in a PSA 7.

    Dryer sheets work well also.

Yea, but those dryer sheets are really tough to stretch over your toes. image

I like using dryer sheets. They not only remove the stain, but leave a nice, spring meadow smell. Seriously, that worked very well for me on a bunch of 86 Fleer stickers.

I agree, as opposed to the wetter sheets

  • HEY !!!! It's not a stain unless it soaks into the card ! Wax residue is a more correct description. If it was a stain you would have to use spray and wash ya big dummies !!!

Thanks guys for the advice. The mark seems to be a low spot and won't come out...it just seems like its an ink void. Either way, nothing seems to fix it.
So it's safe to say something like that makes this card now another card to add in my cheap rookie stack. lol
