eBay seller red-zone

Is he a good seller? I thought I read some controversy once upon a time (or maybe it was just he was shaqfu), but I want to take advantage of the 20% livesearch deal and he has a card that I like.

Thanks

tommy has been in the card business for a very long time. he has both ebay id's you mentioned. One is generally for the high end stuff.

He has always been very professional. IMO he is completely trustworthy. I have spent $1000's with him over the years. Never one problem.

If the card is graded you are probably ok.

I have known Tommy Freeman for years and have done quite a few deals with him. Whether you're spending $25.00 or $25,000.00, he will deliver what he offers in a safe and timely fashion. I would deal with him without any concerns and I don't offer such an endorsement to too many people.
  • Doesn't look too risky to me, and jay seems to think he's a good guy.

I've had issues with him, but if it is graded, it shouldn't be a problem. I will say that I think his reputation is questioned on this forum more than any other ebayer.

As long as he isnt selling GEM you are ok. If you are buying raw, downgrade a grade or two. His service is perfect though. I have bought from him many times. Though I dont know him personally, Ive seen him walking around shows and I live only a few miles from him.

    His reputation is questioned why?

I've seen far worse posted about many other eBayers on these boards.

A simple thought that many should keep in mind. If you are buying raw cards from dealers that deal in graded cards and are expecting to find a needle in a haystack, don't come back and complain about the dealer overgrading. The red flag should go up immediately if the card is not in a holder.

Why do you think that some of the biggest graded card sellers have different outlets for their raw cards? Would I buy raw lots from 4SC (or their raw card outlet) or others expecting to get MT and GEM MT cards in the lot even though they might advertise them as such? Heck no! They've probably been through and failed to meet the minimum grades of a PSA prescreen at least 3 times before they're up on eBay.

Even if the card is graded, I wouln't go anywhere near his auctions for an expensive card. He appears to have been the person responsible for tampering with a slabbed Bobby Orr rookie to insert a higher graded card's flip (put a PSA 7 flip into a PSA 4 or PSA 5 card's slab and then resold it). That card ended up in the hands of a board member who sent it back to PSA (who discovered the tampering). Read the old threads about that one.

On expensive raw cards, he has been caught making fake patch cards (pulling out a plain swatch from a numbered card and reselling it with a fancy swatch). He's also one of the leading dealers in counterfeit Star cards in joke grading holders (Capitol and GEM Elite).

    I'd stay away.

I was originally thinking of this card (with the 20% Live Search and 10% eBay coupon + the 3% eBay Bucks)....

Nothing appears to be fishy with this card.

Can't think of a person i would feel more comfortable dealing with.

This is not intended as a defense with regard to Nick's allegations, but I've watched Tommy purchase lots, collections, and showscases. He often just selects a stack of material, gets a price, drops $10,000 or $20,000 and throws it in his showcase.

Anyone that knows him would probably attest to the fact that he's not the kind of person that would sit and doctor a patch card. Could he have someone do it for him? Maybe. Could he have bought it that way in a larger deal? Much more likely.

Again, I wouldn't have any concerns dealing with him.

As always, use discretion and do your research...

Allegations? I just used the picture to say the card has a tilt. That's all.

There was no way Tommy faked a patch card or inserted a fake flip into a holder. I would have 100% trust in his stuff and if there was a problem i would have 100% trust that he would resolve it.

The Orr card did go through his store, that is a fact. Did he do the tampering? I have no idea.

    Brian48 could provide more details.

I once bought a lot of PSA graded 1965 Topps from him through an ebay auction and I was happy with my deal.

Sorry, I didn't mean his reputation is questioned, I meant to say there are many inquiries into his reputation as a dealer. I find that interesting. He sold me some 1985 Nike packs that happened to be reprints. He refunded my money, but I'm pretty sure he kept selling them as legit.

  • Nightcrawler, I had the absolute worst Ebay dealing with Red Zone......PM If you want the details.
  • He provides great service and quick shipping, but unfortunately, is a major clearing house for about every fake card in the past five years. He was a major seller, under various user names, of all the fake Star Co. basketball, fake minor league cards and a bunch more stuff. I wouldn't trust him at all. There was also a situation a few years back where someone was selling a bunch of vintage SCD-graded (red label) cards that had been tampered with and had fake serial numbers on the back. Guess who the seller was? That's right, Red Zone. He's sold everything counterfeit from the 1989 Marino college cards, to the minor league Ripken cards to all the GEM-graded stuff, etc. Stay away!!!

According to an old thread on these boards, he was also the primary dealer on eBay of the fake early '70s grocery cello packs.

I suppose someone selling impossible patches (like the Schmidt jersey card featuring a piece of the MLB 125th Anniversary patch - from 5 years after Schmidt retired) or selling high-dollar cards in tampered PSA slabs could simply be clueless and have bought them, but how dumb would you have to be to buy large quantities of rare Star basketball cards (that didn't look right in several different details) completely unaware of the fact they were counterfeits, and then submit them all to a pair of basement grading companies?
