How do you know if a ball is game used? help with auto

I was just looking for a box of cards and found this ball. I remember when i got it, the "story" was it was a homerun caught then signed by the player. How could you ever prove it? Who is this signed by? Its a national league ball and i must have got it around 1990-1993.

YEP! i remember asking who the hell is that and then buying it anyway.
The kid was pretty trustworthy and was the son of a guy who opened a card store briefly in staten island, he had yogi berra signing for the grand opening in case you remember nick.
