The NHL Has A Draft?

JackWESQJackWESQ Posts: 2,133 ✭✭✭
Apparently, the NHL has a draft. I thought everyone just walked-on, uh I mean skated onto the ice.

I don't know what's worse, the lack of love the NHL gets, or everyone (especially Mel Kiper) over-hyping (is that word?) the NFL and NBA draft.

Same thing with baseball... I never know anybody. The NBA draft used to be full of star caliber four year players, but now it's either freshman who left early or foreign players. The NFL still has plenty of unknowns, but the pre-draft hype is so huge and long that you'll know every player that you never heard of before your team ever picks them in the 5th round.

    Be honest.

How many NHL players can you name?

Now now many players can you name from the OHL, WHL, etc.

How many foreign players and U.S. high school players can you name.

By the way hype exists in NHL draft too...

If he doesn't lead them to the Stanley Cup then maybe his dad will just buy the team and stock it with players. He had declared income of $90 million last year.

Hockey is a "niche" sport so the people being drafted are usually not going to be known except to hard core hockey fans who follow the
    college game.

Baseball is hardly a niche sport but the MLB draft picks are usually unknown to most people because college and amateur baseball has
    a very small following.

A "niche" sport? Tell that to the 20 million Canadians who follow the game religiously.
And Michigan nobody follows college hockey because the best players in the NHL DON'T PLAY college hockey, they play junior hockey up in Canada (YES, even the good American players). Every now and then a quality star comes out of U.S college, but if you grew up playing league hockey in Canada, U.S.A or Russia (or any other country for that matter), you WANT to play junior hockey in Canada. So nobody is going to know these players because even up here in Canada, if you have an NHL franchise nearby, you don't really follow junior, EXCEPT for guy like Lindros, Crosby and now Steven Stamkos.

I actually watched the entire first round of the draft on versus last night. A lot of trades took place in the first round.
Again the Islanders confused the heck out of everyone with their pick. They always draft lousy. The top 5 picks were solid ones, then
it got interesting. The Flyers trading R.J. Umberger was interesting. They said it was a salary cap move so they could sign Jeff Carter.
Corey Wilson's son got drafted. That was cool. A lot of Ontario kids got drafted in the first round for a change.

Watch out for next years draft. There is a kid in junior who scored more goals then Wayne Gretzky did in junior, even though he's
more of a Phil Esposito type. He's not even close to the skill level of Gretzky or Lemieux.

That would be John Tavares. He currently plays for the Oshawa Generals. The hype on him has lasted about two years now but he had a rather average year (for him anyway) so he may be cooling off. Still, many still consider him to go #1 next year.

I didn't watch the draft, but believe it or not there are Hockey fans here in Florida! Supposedly he's the real deal. I am looking forward to seeing him play with Vinny Lecavalier

OK, well Canada is a "niche" country to most Americans and of little interest or notice so the same principle applies to
sports that are mainly popular there and not in the US. image

I'm not sure I agree with the Melrose deal. He hasn't coached in a long time. I hope I am wrong though. I was happy to see the Bolts resign Prospal though.
