ladies and germs, presenting San Marino's first Proof Euro set..

sometimes the mailman is not so nice to me.. when i get a stack of junk mail and bills.. sometimes he is nice to me, when he hands me something like this, which the tiny Republic of San Marino (which isn't much more than a castle on a hill with a little town around it).. very first eight coin Proof Euro set.. if i dis-remember incorrectly, San Marino is the oldest free Republic nation in the world..
after mailing my personalized, barcoded, account-numbered, DNA-impregnated order form back.. they charged me almost three months ago, along with their yearly eight coin Mint set and a 2 Euro Commemorative.. they sent me the coolest of the three things first.. issued on 8 June, 2008, a massive Mintage of 13,000 sets (you were supposed to laugh there.. so please do.. by comparison.. the Vatican issues 16,000 Proof sets each year).. here is the Republic of San Marino's very first eight coin Euro Proof set since they joined Euroland in 2002.. already totally sold out..
following pictures hastily shot in shaded sunlight outdoors where it's about 95f this afternoon.. both sides of the padded mailer (address label pixellated for your pixellating pleasure).. the reverse of same, which is wall-papered with Republic of San marino stamps.. common practice for them to plaster stamps all over their mailers.. check out the full block of what i think are a dozen famous opera singers and performers.. check out the bottom row, second guy from the right.. can you even imagine the USPS issuing a stamp with an illustration of a famous person who has a cigarette dangling from his lips?.. i cannot read the round cancellations' postmark date and i REALLY wish they wouldn't use the word "COIN" in big bold letters on the little green customs label.. it's almost like printing "Steal me!" on it.. but this package made it about 9000 miles to me totally un-molested anyway..
following that, the stuff inside.. the packing slip / invoice which you don't need to see anyway.. a glossy, snow white box with imprinted Gold lettering, inside of which is a book-format case with magnetic closure, housing the first-ever full set of eight encapsulated 2008 San Marino Euros in Proof with a finger notch next to each one.. 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, and the two Bi-Metallics.. 1 Euro and 2 Euro.. and a snazzy fold-out COA printed on parchment, or somthing like it, in a pocket on the inside "book" lid.. sorry about the glare.. i shot these in a hurry..
now i sit and enjoy it and wait and see what the Euro dealers start charging for it.. i've asked three of them (ECI / Downies, RSM, and another one in Europe.. but they had no answer yet.. none of them have it in stock yet either.. ).. limit per subscription order was one (1) of these sets.. i don't believe dealers can buy in bulk.. but i think this set has some umm.. interesting potential should i choose to sell it later.. considering this is San Marino's first-ever Euro Proof set, the Mintage is only 13,000 (3,000 lower than the yearly Vatican Proof sets).. and already totally sold out.. well.. it could get interesting..
San Marino's coin and stamp office is called the AASFN.. they DO sell on the Web.. but if you go to:
their official site
and click on the coin at the bottom, and then scroll down on the resulting page to their 2008 issues.. you'll notice no shopping cart next to this set.. can't buy it any more.. sold out.. all gone..

<< <i>Nice looking coins. I have to pick up something from San Marino one of these days since I share my last name with it. >>
i have been on their subscription list since 2002 and still have the 2005, 2006, and 2007 full BU / Mint sets sitting here (really gorgeous packaging / holders.. you can see them on their Web site).. along with one of each of those years' 2 Euro Commemorative.. i'll eventually eBay them, unless you want to PM me and make me an offer i can't refuse for any of them.. have all the original padded mailers too.. many of them also wall-papered with San Marino stamps..
the 2008 regular Mint / BU set, and 2 Euro Commemorative will ship to me later this year.. checking their 2008 release schedule, they just pushed them back..
