Sometimes you just have to ask yourself 'is it or isn't it' . . .

W9/8? Possible, the head of the 9 looks round enough. Good luck.

May be a rare version of the 1859 canadian large cent worth a lot more money than he paid - either a wide 9 or 8/9.

Gene has it correct. It may be a W9/8. The head of the 9 does look round but it's difficult to tell for sure.

Good gamble---Not much downside on this one. If it is nothing, you can just resell it and break even. If it is a 9/8 you made out. It does appear to be a 9/8 to me. But could be just a bad photo. i cherried a 1859/8 off a local dealer about 30 years ago. image
