Jerome Bettis Vs. Curtis Martin

With Deion Sanders and Marshall Faulk near certain 2011 inductees, it isn't likely that BOTH Jerome Bettis and Curtis Martin also make the HOF in 2011 (their first year of eligibility).

If you had to pick one or the other...Who makes the HOF first?

Tale of the tape:

Jerome Bettis
6 time Pro Bowler
2 time 1st Team All-Pro
13,662 rush yards
3,479 carries
15,111 yards from scrimmage
94 TDs
41 fumbles
4 times-Top 5 in rushing yards
674 yards and 9 TD is 13 career playoff games
One Super Bowl Appearance- One Super Bowl Ring

Curtis Martin
5 time Pro Bowler
1 time 1st Team All-Pro
14,101 rush yards
3,518 carries
17,430 yards from scrimmage
100 TDs
29 fumbles
5 times-Top 5 in rushing yards
793 yards and 8 TD is 10 career playoff games
One Super Bowl Appearance- No Super Bowl Ring

Bettis will get in first IMO, I disliked Curtis once he signed on with the Jets so Im biased but all in all Bettis helped the Steelers win a Super Bowl so that right there puts him ahead in a photo finish.

No chance either gets in before Deion OR Marshall Faulk..Both will get in eventually no doubt...They are very close in many aspects, just wondering who everyone (or anyone) thinks would go in first if you had to choose...

I'd be very surprised if Martin is not a first ballot HOFer. He was the epitome of class on and off the field, and an outstandingly productive and durable back until the very end of his career. I'd say Bettis should get in, too, but Martin gets there first, IMO.

UNFORTUNATELY, I can see Bettis making it and not Martin. I think Martin was the better player, if for no other reason than Martin had the higher yards per game (83.9 versus 71.2) AND was a better pass catching back (484 receptions for 3329 yards v. 200 receptions for 1449 yards). I can see Peter King, who is HOF voter, saying some B.S., e.g., that Martin belongs in the Hall of Very, Very Good.

  • Loved them both, but liked Curtis more as a player. Not included in his stat sheeet is his blocking ability. Probably the best blocking back since Sweetness.

I choose Bettis....although they both should get in. Stats are very close, but Bettis had the cooler nickname, did better in college, won a Super Bowl, but looked really cool in black and gold.

Ok, none of those are reasons why Bettis is better then Martin.....but that wasn't the question.

Amazing how Deon Sanders is likely a HOF'er....and I agree he is. I was living in Atlanta when he played there....afraid to get dirty.
