Just got my report card

this hurts my feelingsimage

NM-MT 8: Near Mint-Mint.

A PSA NM-MT 8 is a super high-end card that appears Mint 9 at first glance, but upon closer inspection, the card can exhibit the following: a very slight wax stain on reverse, slightest fraying at one or two corners, a minor printing imperfection, and/or slightly off-white borders. Centering must be approximately 65/35 to 70/30 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the reverse.

Mine's the 7, the 8's from one of the sets ahead of me.

Guys please help me work through this, I've got 30 cards better than the Aaron but nothing graded better than an 8. I'm trying to understand...I'm not really saying anything, but I'm just saying

  • Based on the scans I would rather have the 7 anyday. That 8 is ugly.

If the grade don't fit...you must resubmit!

Tough to say yours is 8 worthy from the scan...although it's fairly easy (IMO anyway) to say the 8 is probably overgraded.

ouch that is brutal... that 8 looks like a 4 in my opinion..
and yours looks higher then a 7 without question...
    very clean looking card

I hate those embossed cards.. so ugly..
crack out and send back on a bulk sub.... don't spend $15 more on that card
or just worry about a better card to focus on

What usually knocks a card down to a 7 is not touched corners but a slight bend on the edge toward the corners. Look closely at the edges close to the corners, you'll probably find something.

The surface on yours look better by the scans.....but the comparison scans clearly show more detail. Your photos are slightly out of focus....compare the letters.

  • From the numbers given on your flips, it looks like you submitted all at one time and just pulled a grader having a "baaaad day". You probably could re-submit those for review and have a few bumped or crack and submit for better grades maybe. If you feel your cards are better than the grades given, then persistence will usually be rewarded.

Thanks ncdolefan--but how do you "crack" a capsule? I'm afraid I might end up damaging the card.

Thanks MG--I see what you mean. Could be pilot error! I may try to retake some of the images and tighten the focus. What made me hopeful about these cards--with the exception of Shaw (worse card in the set) there are hardly any scuffs or blemishes. They were all shipped (originally) together (I ordered them out of Sporting News ad by Topps I think) and never were in gum packs, so no powdered sugar etc. I may need better lighting too--but several--like this Brooks Robinson card I thought had legitimate chance to go mint. But out of 72--not one 9--and they were grading some 9s (maybe as many as 20 or so) when mine were in house because I was watching the pop report.

One more question for anyone--I got busted pretty bad for several printing defects (line down surface of card). Now I was under the impression in that case--where everything else is good except a printing flaw, they would still give you the number but with a qualifier. Instead they just busted all those cards back to 4s. Once again this is all new to me so any insights are appreciated!

the centering on the 4 and the two top corners probably helped bring it down.

This is how I have cracked capsules in the past:

Get a flat head screwdriver and a hammer. Fit the screwdriver into the groove between the two pieces of plastic on any side of the holder and lightly hammer it down. Do this in as many places as necessary until you can pry it open. As long as you do it gingerly and cautiously, you won't damage the card.

    Hope that helps.

  • Just above the lower right corner on that Hart looks like it is folded as well so 4 is probaly a fitting grade. That fold is in an area that it might actually be on every card to one extent or another. If that is the case that could be your probelm on all of them.
