This Silver Medal was commissioned by the Jefferson Full Step Nickel Club (JFSNC). It accurately depicts Felix Schlag's original design. This design was selected as the best at a contest with almost 400 entries. However the US Mint insisted on a frontal view of Monticello with more traditional lettering. Personally I really like the art deco lettering and feel Schlag's portrayal of Monticello was much more artistic.

The JFSNC limited the mintage to 1,938 proof examples. This is appropriate because 1938 was the first year of issue for the Jefferson Nickel. These medals are made of pure silver. They are numbered and encapsulated by SEGS.

Today (Sunday) is the final day for the eBay coins. The FSNC silver medal and some of the proofs are going very cheaply as of this update. The Danish 20 Kroner gold is strong with 27 watchers. I think it will take a strong snipe to win it.

Nice nickel, I've always wanted one of those. I'll be bidding on that one. Also... didn't the mint make two 65 nickels with his initials on them? Anyone know what ever happened to those?

Felix Schlag's initials were added in 1966. That last time I researched the question I felt that no initial nickels were actually made in 1965, that 1965 nickels with the initial were only a rumor. I don't have any reference of that here so am going by my memory which isn't as great as it once was.

Well, looks like I got that nickel after all. Anyhow, did a little research and it shows that there were two 66 nickels that were presentation pieces to Felix. Apparently no one knows what happened to them, supposedly they were proof instead of sms. Ah wouldn't it be sweet to have one of those. Thanks for the opportunity to pick this up.
