Continuously upgrading big $$ cards

How has this scenario worked out for all those that have tired?

I have a few big rookies I want to buy: 48 Robinson PSA 6 - 7 , 1954 Aaron 6 - 7, 1933 Goudey Ruth 2 - 3 , T206 Cobb 3 - 4, 1939 Williams 4 -5, etc.. looking for nice centering on all

I haven't been able to win any of the recent Ebay sales and I'm getting a bit antsy. Should I try and win a lesser grade to be able to hold/caress right now, with the intent of selling as soon as I do win a higher grade? Or should I just stand firm and wait for my grade to come up? I really don't want to lose any money on a "flip" of the lower grade.

Thanks for all input, Tom

Basically, you'll be renting the lower-grade card until you get the higher grade card you want.

Just watch your finances. If you put asside $1500 for an Aaron rookie, and spent $600 on a filler, you'll be $600 short when the Aaron you want comes along.

My recommendation is to buy the best grade of the card that you can find and afford now. Keep it as long as it makes you happy or until you find an upgrade at a reasonable price. I do this rather frequently...some have been upgrades that I had for 15 years...some I only had the card for a few months and found a nicer card at the right price right away. When I sell the lower grade card, I have been able to sell for at least my original buy price or for a little more in most cases.

A recent example that I just upgraded: I had an SGC 5.5 1951 Bowman Chuck Bednarik that was purchased raw back in the early nineties. I have looked for an upgrade at the right price for many years. Finally on Father's day, I won a SGC 8 for just over $100 which is what a 7 SMR's for. My patience and persistance really paid off for me. Now I have a 5.5 to sell which I will do my best to get at least what I paid for it 15 years ago.

To answer your question...it depends on how patient you are. Can you hold off the for exact grade you want and hopefully find it at the right price? If so, wait. If not, buy the highest grade at the price you are willing to spend and find now and keep searching for an upgrade.

Sometimes I will do that, or the opposite, you MUST be patient though. Buy a PSA 8 in a card, then sell when th eprices are up..turn around and buy a 7 when prices are down. I always tel myself that I wont buy the other until I sell the first...never happens that way though. In short, be prepared to own both cards at some point image
