  • Tangkas were used in Tibet. Those are the ones that have the dates that are a headache to figure out.

    actually, those are different coins.

    Tankas are ancient india coins.

    I believe that there is a Michael Mitchner reference that could be useful. I have it in my own numismatic library.

    Correction. I just noted that you were referring to ancient Indian coinage. The tankas that I am familiar with are temple tokens.

    Vendors Steve Album and Scott Seman may have refererences.

    Zeno.ru is another good reference site for Indian coins, and Asian and Islamic coins generally. If my linking skills are adequate, I believe this will give you a search on zeno.ru for "tanka".

    I believe the Tibetan tangka was named after, if not directly descended from, the Indian tanka.
