Who else is in the "boat"...Too many cards, no room.

For all practical purposes, I got "out" of hardcore collecting in approximately 2003. My Dad and I did shows in the mid 90's, and accumulated alot of cards. alot. I guess that the total is near 100,000, and maybe 200 complete sets in that total. I just went through alot of the ones I thought still had value. We had price tags on alot of these sets, and I was shocked to see how worthless they actually are for the space they take up.

1985 Donruss factory sealed, we had a tag of $250 on it, eBays around $40 now.
1986 Donruss fs, tag at $175, now its what $10?
Tons of sets from 86-1992, I dont think any of them are worth more that $10.
I could go on and on, 90 ud 89 ud, etc..

I ended up taking all of my stuff to a friends house who has room to keep stuff like this, it was filling a walkin closet in my place. I kept what solid cards I still have, Marino, Montana, payton, other rookies that will hold value, and put them in a safety lock box at the bank.

What are you guys doing with this stuff, can I honestly think that in 50 years, when Im an old man, that they will even then be worth keeping?
Am I speaking Chinese?

  • I sold everything off card wise in the 1999/2000 era and I am glad I did given how far prices have fallen. I got tired of cards and how much space they took up, as well as, how many sets were now on the market. When quanity over quality took hold I knew it was time to go.

I changed my collecting to things that either tell or are a piece of the history of the game like player contracts, press pins and the like. I am having more fun know in the hobby than I did collecting complete sets.
