Anyone up for an ancient identification?

Picked this up in a yard sale for a cool buck.

Definitely foriegn ancient design?

But is it real / repro?

Coin is slightly larger in diameter than a modern US penny and

is about 1.5 times as thick and

weighs a wopping 5.8 grams!

Coin appears to be copper and is NOT magnetic.

Did I get burnt like I am assuming I did?

Take a look, any help in identifying is much appreciated!

  • This is a common modern "copy" loosely based on a bronze coin from the Bar Kochba rebellion (which took place in the 130s A.D.). There are many varieties, but a decent real coin would start somewhere around $2-300. I cannot read Hebrew so I do not know what the text says, but it looks nothing like the original. Perhaps this was some sort of promotional piece?

A grade is an inadequate report of an inaccurate judgement by a biased and variable judge of the extent to which a coin corresponds to an undefinable level of an unattainable state of preservation. - Never tell me that grading is science.

Yep, a commonly found imitation ancient - probably sold as a tourist copy in Israel. The design is similar to a Bar Kochba bronze, but the lettering is Modern Hebrew, not the Ancient form used on ancient coins. Ormandh also picked up one of these, shown in this recent thread.

Here is the fake coin report on FORVM.

And here is an original, from the Wildwinds database. The original coins say "Eleazar the Priest" on the tree side, and "Year 1 of the redemption of Israel" on the grapes side.

I'm not sure what these imitations say. Since exporting genuine ancient coins from Israel without a permit is illegal, maybe it says "Dear customs agent: this coin is fake".

  • Automan and Sapyx,

Thanks for the info! I knew someone in here would be able to ID this "coin"

And Sapyx as far as the quote:

" I'm not sure what these imitations say. Since exporting genuine ancient coins from Israel without a permit is illegal, maybe it says "Dear customs agent: this coin is fake".

    I am ROTFLMAO!!!!!!

The coin may not be worth the metal it is stamped on but the buck I spent to get it was worth your hilarious input!

Once again, thanks to the both of you!
