1849 Mexico 8 Reales......

I posted this earlier on the U.S. Coin Forum, but also wanted to get some info from the experts here. I figure VF something....

Any other info?? It came from the 'bay at a fair price..... (I think). I really like it because it's big, silver, and represents the last year California was a part of Mexico...... before the Gold Rush.

Thanks,

Rick

I don't know how to attribute these by mint, but I can tell you it is 0.9030 silver with .7859 oz. ASW. I thin VF also.

Ah! I think it may be a Guanajuato mint which Krause's for $20. in VF.

Yes, it is from the Guanajuato mint.

It is a common coin and your example is well struck with only a portion having a soft impression. The details on the snake are excellant.

I would hope that it looks as nice in person and that you would think twice about using it as a pocket piece.
  • Thanks for the responses. I really like this coin and rest assured, I won't be using it for my pocket piece. A few weeks ago, I bid a another exactly like it (but it was corroded and VG at best) which went for more than twice what I paid for this one! Go figure..... the 'bay. It does look a lot better in hand, especially the toning, and so I guess I've got to keep looking for another one to carry around.

    Thanks again,
