It looks like a small stars to me, due to the stars having an asterisk shape. There are two die marriages for this- V1 and V2.

You can read up on these Small Stars varieties in the thread below, linked from another board. Mr.HalfDime has kindly shared his vast knowledge regarding these, if you scroll down below the pics of my coin. That will save him some typing when he finds your thread here.

I grade your coin AU50 details, with at least average surfaces, with a possible ancient cleaning (though not offensive by any means).

Ordinarily, the clashed dies will not bring a premium on half dimes. They are common on many die marriages. There may be some exceptions where a specialist will pay extra for a late die state, but probably 30% of my half dime collection has clashed dies, so it's a common "error."

I've got an 1838 half-dime that PCGS graded Large Stars (ms60).

Yet, it has: (1) heavy rust on the obverse, (2) what appears to me to be 'smaller' stars, (3) the reverse has the die crack running from the rim to the "A" in America and the "C" in America and also, (4) it has the 'extra' berry located just below the "ER" in America.

I have pics, but probably at such high magnification, the pics would be lousy.

Anyways, my question is this: is it possible to have all these 'small stars' characteristics on a Large Star variety, or did PCGS misattribute this coin?
