Shops in Chicago??

The wife and I are planning a vacation the first week of August for some book signing she wants to go to on the 5th in Chicago. What a coincidence that the National is the weekend before that in the same city! After I get to see what's up with that show, I was hoping to find some good shops that I can jump on the trains and get to and fill some want lists. I'd really like to find a store that had a decent selection of hockey cards. I'm trying to build all of the OPC sets from the 80's, and some patch sets from 2000, and a low-grade 71-72 OPC set. From there, it's just somewhere to sort through a good selection of baseball cards. Can anyone give me advice on where to go? Thanks for the help.

I'm not familiar with the shops in the Chicago area, but if you get to go to the National, you should be able to fill all your wantlists there if they are still anything like they were in the 80's and 90's. Incredible selections at the National.

    Good luck,

the selection at the National is going to greatly surpass anything you might find at a shop. Just don't wait til the last day (Sunday) as things start thinning out.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • The prices at the shops are completely jacked up anyway. I'd go to the National or stick with Ebay. God Bless the shops because they need to stay in business and pay the rent, but the prices sometimes are obscene.
  • Search for a shops thread...there are a ton of them on the forum.

I live in the burbs of Chicago and there are no good shops I'm aware of in the area.

  • That's really sad that in our second largest city, one with a pretty loyal sports following doesn't have a decent shop to stop by. Thanks for the info guys. I can only make the national on Sunday, but maybe one of the local dealers set up will have some hockey stuff or mid grade vintage that I might be able to look at later in the week.
