Keith Olbermann Alive at 49

Olbermann is a dedicated baseball fan and historian of the sport, with membership in the Society for American Baseball Research.[45] He is also one of the most prominent baseball card collectors in the country, particularly of T-206 tobacco cards and other rare cards, such as the very rare 2006 Alex Gordon rookie card.[46] He argues that New York Giants baseball player Fred Merkle should not be denied inclusion into the Baseball Hall of Fame because of a baserunning mistake."[47] He contributed the foreword to More Than Merkle (ISBN 0-8032-1056-6), a book requesting amnesty for Merkle's error, also known as the "Merkle Boner." Olbermann was also one of the founders of the first experts' fantasy baseball league. He was one of the founders of the USA Today Baseball Weekly LABR league, giving the league its nickname (LABR stands for League of Alternative Baseball Reality).[48] Because of his extensive baseball knowledge, Olbermann is a consultant to Topps, the baseball card manufacturer. Topps allowed him to open the first pack of 2007 baseball cards on Countdown the week before they hit stores. The first card of the pack was Johnny Damon of the New York Yankees.

It is also worth noting that Keith Olbermann has six lumbar vertebrae instead of the normal five.

As a fellow MSNBC show host, I am sure he is saddened by the new of Tim Russert, as well.

Why does everyone have to be such goobs? Why can't people just show respect and go on?

KO is the ultimate ranter. His show is super, and even though
he is in the bag for all the wrong candidates, I like him alot.

He's a POS. The antithesis of a good man and good journalist like Tim Russert.

Exactly. Pretend Russert is a family member, how would you feel if people mocked their tragic and VERY early death?

I liked Russert even though I didn't always agree with him. He seemed fair and honest. Olbermann is an arrogant jerk.

I think it's funny that this thread is actually getting serious responses with regard to what people think about Olbermann.
  • I would not waste my spit on Olbermann, even if I had the chance to do such. A true pile of garbage.

Olbermann would be well known in the hobby even if he wasnt a house hold name on TV.

He wrote many an article as far back as early 1970s (12-13 years old) for baseball publications like the Traders Speak, Baseball Hobby News, SCD etc. He is also the owner of the famous group of (unissued poses) T206 proofs (ie Eddie Collins batting card). Whenever I see him bid on eBay I say clear, no way I will top his bids.

I'm happy to report that Tom Brokaw is also alive. But tragically, former President Gerald Ford was eaten by wolves.

The point of this thread is that you will talk trash about someone as long as they are alive, but as soon as they die they become great and you praise them and blah blah blah. If KO had kicked today the same ones bashing him would be all up on his nutz.

Still not sure why so many people get all twisted up over talking heads. I think it may have something to do with unhappiness in their own existence, but I can't be sure without further scientific study.

I nominate StanTheMan for a frontal labotomy.

What? What do you mean he's already had one? That explains soooo much!

In reference to Olbermann, he bought some Topps 206 cards from me on ebay years ago. I had more that he needed and we negotiated the sale of those off ebay. Seemed very cordial throughout...

I don't think so. I think we would have seen a lot of celebration from the same people frothing at the mouth in the earlier posts.

To your point...I wasn't crazy about Russert as a journalist, but I wouldn't even dream of going into that memorial thread and listing my problems with his work. Neither the time nor the place. Similarly, I'm not exactly a fan of George Will's, but I know he's a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Baseball fan (Men At Work is a fine book) and I would really like to think that if his name came up here in a card collecting context, I wouldn't immediately start yelling about how much I hated him and his politics.
  • otwcardsotwcards Posts: 5,291 ✭✭✭
I'm just amazed at the polarization that some take on political stands. Especially when they take something that has been presented out of context and run with it as if it were gospel.

And the one question that I have for extremists from both sides of the aisle, why is it that someone can't support the US military while being against the War in Iraq? Why can't someone question the leadership of the current administration without being considered anti-American?

I was under the impression that those in our military (and some of my family members) fight and often die to protect both our right to have these concerns as well as voice them. I thought it was our repsonsibility to challenge our leaders. To demand accountability and to force them to listen to the voice of the majority and not to cowtow to some minimalistic special interest group or self serving benefactor that will financially support their next campaign.

Olbermann? Oft times he's an ass, but there are times that he raises vaild points. Whether you agree with him or not, they are questions that many Americans are asking or want answers to. Just because someone doesn't like him asking them doesn't mean he's anti-American or treasonous for doing so. Just as are O'Reilly, Maher, Limbaugh and others free to make their statements, read their agenda driven drivel and ask their questions.

Olbermann doesn't have many friends in the media - even on the left. I've heard one host from LA's Air America affiliate refer to Olbermann on the air with "I agree with his politics, but he's a complete a**".

It's considered very ill-mannered to speak negatively toward the recently deceased, but the volume and nature of comments about Tim Russert makes it clear how liked and respected he was by people he interviewed or worked with.

I think Olberman is great for the hobby. He trys to get the hobby into the mainstream. He wrote the forward for 2004 and 2005 Cracker Jack. On Letterman one night he brought out a few cards. The Ripken card and another of Billy Martin giving the finger down the bat barrel. I follow what he buys on ebay and find it very interesting since is a major collector.

Olbermann would be well known in the hobby even if he wasnt a house hold name on TV.

He would just ALOT poorer...and therefore not able to generate the hype over Alex Gordon full cards, or be able to purchase T206 rare poses or proofs.

I wonder why they removed a thread about a journalist who died that turned into a political debate on a sportscard message board.....

When I die, I give you all free reign to start a thread here with comments like "He was a jackass and I'm glad to see him go."

sorry, last time i checked this is still America. If someone wants to trash, smear etc the current douche bag in chief, thats their right.

It boggles my mind that anyone can still sit there and support the current administration given their tremendous failings, cover-ups and outright lies. They are so far out of touch with the state of this country, its economy, the cost of food, gas et.al. that they need a good swift kick in the ass.

I hope the next President, whomever may that be, have an ounce of common sense and the desire to fix the problems of the past 8 years.

Olberman may some say some stupid things, but he has every right to say them.
